Tale Of The Tape: Free Safety

Recommended Posts

a better front seven will help our secondary a lot this year. I love the free agent signings, but they

weren't elite or anything.

I'm thinking our entire defense is going to be vastly improved and surprise a lot of people this year.

Last year, just too much confusion and injury, new coaches....this year, I could see us getting twice as

better statistically.

Those measurables matter, but what I think matters more is the mental side of it. Let's face it, up to now Nakamura has been around great defensive leaders and coaches. He has been the understudy of one of the best safeties of the era. Meanwhile Martin has had to learn 2 systems, and his mentor is Godfrey...come on! Martin's learning curve his high as a result. He's played a lot of snaps so maybe experience does count for something.

My thinking is that Nakamura has the advantage of being on a successful, winning team. He's been developing in situations where he can succeed. Martin has been put in a lot of positions where he can't really succeed. He was thrust into a starting position before he was ready. Nak is a good player and will contribute on special teams. This will be Martins first year of a full offseason under Rivera and McDermott. Nakamura's too.

This is going to be an interesting competition going into training camp.

I actually think the coaches have it right with Martin in the starting spot as of now. Its Nakamura's position to win.

I want to see a comparison of their blown coverage and missed tackle stats...

I haven't anointed Nakamura, but he has been Ed Reed's understudy for several years so I'm hoping some of that rubbed off on him. At worst, he's a ST stud and will be able to make major contributions in that phase of the game.

Been broken down before...

Godfrey misses more tackles than Martin.... consistantly. PFF also consistatly rates Godfrey worse in coverage

PFF has Godfrey with 18 missed tackes and Martin with 15.....tied for 3rd and 5th most respectively. They have Godfrey as one of their worst safeties overall and Martin is rated better but not that much better.

They are both terrible.

Problem remains people bash Martin and act like Godfrey has things under control. Both were issues last year.....Godfrey has been an issue his entire career

I've felt that the safety position has been the weakest part of the defense for a while. It's almost like they are non-existent.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
