A new perspective on Byron Bell

I agree. I love this young O-line with Kalil/Gross as the veteran leaders.

Both Silatolu and Bell's stories are great, glad they're finally starting to shut up the haters on this forum.

i'm not worried about the oline. it's in good shape all the way down and it looks like it will be for a few more years.

imo, it's safe to say Oline is not a top draft priority.

i know it's just preseason and all, but as bad as bell was...he played like a rookie on the oline. aside from the top and most elite prospects coming out of college, which is only a small percentage of those taken even in the first round, they all look like they have roller skates on and they all make a poo ton of mistakes and penalties. he won't be perfect this year, but he will show a lot of growth and he'll show he's not the "liability" he was last year. and if he does, we've got someone of decent quality in campbell who can step in and do well if needed.

Bell is better than Campbell. That's all I'm going to say.

unless he isn't. 90% possible bell is better. i was just saying that if bell hasn't improved dramatically and isn't as good as we think/hope, then campbell would be a decent replacement.

either way, i'm not worried.

i too am impressed with bell, but comparing him to martin is as ridiculous as the The Golden Calf of Bristol/cam comparisons last year. when one is a rookie and the other is not it's sort of a silly point.

This is why people should be happy Bell played as good as any rookie can play last year.

Martin was a high high prospect, probably the 2nd or 3rd ranked Tackle in this past draft depending on what you think. And he played like how a rookie should've played, POOR. But he was playing against Charles Johnson, not good to be playing a man who just got paid a tons of money. Though, Jonathan Martin will be a really really good Tackle in the near future, and if Miami can keep that OLINE core intact, man they're going to have a damn good OLINE with Long, Pouncey, and Martin.

Well that just isn't true. Statements like that is what brings out the so called "Bell" haters.

rookie Otah poo'd all over rookie Bell. Should of been that way. There rookie play wasn't in the same ballpark.

Otah didn't play like a rookie O-lineman, nor did Maurkice Pouncey, Joe Thomas or Ryan Clady.

Bell being an UDFA, played as good as any Rookie player youd think should play like. Had a better season last year than a Tyron Smith or Gabe Carimi. And looked better than Jonathan Martin, a 2012 high prospect and 2nd Rounder.

Rookie Otah also played in an offense about 100 times simpler than this one that allowed him to constantly play to his strength (run blocking), and rookie Otah also didn't have Cam running around like a madman behind him. I don't think anyone would argue that Otah has/had more talent and natural ability, but it's not like Bell was absolutely awful last year. You don't have that kind of offensive production with a terrible tackle.

True, Otah didn't have to pass protect almost every single play like Bell. Everyone knew Otah wasn't as great a pass blocker than he was a run blocker. Not saying Bell is better, but been saying for a very long time now that people should give Bell more credit than he deserve. I just hate seeing how people assumes that Campbell is better than Bell and should be the starting RT.

    • Given that the immediate impact we need at edge. We almost certainly address that in Free agency, not in the draft. Same with Linebacker, unless Styles or Allen is still there at 19. I think the same for OT.  What is the position that we could draft in the 1st round and get immediate help in the first is how im approaching their decision-making  I know ill get dragged for this, but im thinking they go DT in the first. A guy that can play right away and be a complement to D.Brown to wreak havoc at the LOS.   So unless a top tier LB is there, I think DT will be the move.
    • I think people forget that by his last season Steve Smith had the ass and he played like it - and for no really good reason other than that other stars were emerging on the team and he didn't want to share the spot light.  He was more of a locker room distraction than he was worth. He went on to have great performances with the Ravens' but G-man made the right move allowing him to move on from here.  I personally think it was addition by subtraction and we don't have a super bowl run with Smith on the roster. Steve Smith remains a narcissist who I've never seen internalize his own culpability when it comes to his relationships with others - it's always somebody else's fault as to why he was forced to act like an asshole. This video is a product ad.  I'm cringed that either of these two Panther greats are party to it.
    • I think the ‘issue’ here is that we had two guys that clashed for several reasons. In some ways they were different, but in other ways they had a lot in common, and sadly they couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Sometimes when you have two people like that together they are either going to love or hate each other, and if it’s the latter, you need someone to mediate and hope the two individuals are capable of putting their differences aside for the common good. In this instance, they couldn’t find a way to move forwards together because I don’t think either guy wanted to play second fiddle to the other. This video basically said neither guy had the tools to bridge that gap and mend that fence, and perhaps also were unwilling to give an inch at that stage in their lives and careers. So a divorce, while unfortunate, was always likely. Do we win the Super Bowl with Smitty and Cam? Well, it’s one of life’s big what ifs for us Panthers fans.
