Panthers coordinators focus on fundamentals

CHARLOTTE – Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott didn't see the progress he hoped to in last Thursday's 36-7 loss to the New York Giants. In fact, he saw regression."I feel like we took a step back," McDermott said. "As a defense generally speaking, we took a step back."The Giants had the Panthers defense on its heels for much of the night, throwing for 280 yards, running for 125 and holding a 13:20 advantage in time of possession.With that outing behind them, McDermott and his players are hoping to take two steps forward in Week 4."We've got a lot of guys that take a lot of pride in their work. They came back (Monday) ready to get to work and get down to business," McDermott said. "We're ready to get back to fundamentals and doing what we do well. We got knocked down but we have to get back up."NEXT UP, ATLANTA: The Panthers defense knows it'll need to show improvement to limit the high-powered Falcons offense in the Georgia Dome."They are 3-0 and (Matt Ryan) is a great quarterback, he really is," McDermott said. "He's doing a lot at the line of scrimmage. A lot of no huddle out of a lot of different personnel groups, and they put a lot on his shoulders."As he goes, so goes the offense. He's got weapons all around him with the running back (Michael Turner), the tight end position (Tony Gonzalez) and now with both Julio (Jones) and Roddy (White) outside and (Harry) Douglas in the slot. We're going to have our hands full. Our players know that."Last week against the Giants, missed tackles were a major factor in Carolina's inability to get off the field and McDermott needs to see more sure-tackles in Atlanta. "We've got to improve tackling," McDermott said. "You don't get anywhere in this league if you don't tackle well. We have to improve the tackling and that started in training camp. We emphasized it but we haven't gotten it to where it needs to be yet. We're going to keep working on it."OFF NIGHT FOR OFFENSE: While the Giants offense found its groove early last Thursday, the Panthers offense never got in gear."There were plays to be had for us; we just have to get better at our consistency," offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski said. "You're playing a good team like New York and you have to be firing on all cylinders. We were just off a little bit."As the deficit and frustration built, so did the offense's propensity to look for a big play to get back in the game."I think one of the things that we all are doing at times is pressing, and trying to do too much and compensate," Chudzinski said. "We have a lot of real competitive guys on the team and if we stick to each one of us taking care of our jobs, I think good things will come."

looks like both guys know where they failed and are working to correct it.

they may not come out of ATL with a win, but i think that we will still see a big improvement in how they play and then they'll start winning.

i'm looking at the giants game as being equal to the titans game of last year. they went into detroit and played a lot better, even though they didn't come out with a win and then they started winning more than they lost. i'm hoping that they just need to have an embarrassing game for them to really get serious about it and get everyone on the same page. the earlier they get those out of the way they better if that's the case.

I read that, and asked myself, what is it exactly that this defense does well? I couldn't come up with an answer.

- we used to be a good defense........ didnt even take an arrow to the knee

first couple weeks they were pretty good against the pass...well...against WRs. they also did a pretty good job of getting to the QB and putting a lot of pressure on him, esp. w/ TD.

they just screwed the pooch by rolling so much attention over to cruz and took too long to adjust.

i think what they could do well is blitz and shut down the passing game by playing aggressive and tight. they just aren't doing it.

Not only did McDermott not blame himself for running zone all night, he doesn't even realize that he ran zone all night. If anything, he seems to think the opposite. I know you're trying to put a positive spin on this, but there is nothing good about McDermott having no clue where everything went wrong. This guy seems to have no idea where to start.

McDermott officially has no clue. Rivera, please take over the defense.

i don't know about mcD. i don't hate him like others do, but i do know that rivera needs to be running that D. it definitely needs his discipline and structure. i think mcD is smart, but what he has always lacked is discipline...and i don't mean over others, i mean he isn't disciplined himself. he can out-think himself and be too aggressive in his play-calling. that's where discipline is needed and where rivera needs to be taking over and working as a mentor.

mcD needed a couple more seasons under jim johnson, imo, before he was 100% ready for the DC job himself. what i had hoped when he was hired was that rivera would pick up where johnson left off, only he would be doing it as a HC.

      Falcons with Major Offensive Line Injuries to Start the Season

      The Falcons have 2 significant offensive line injuries to start the 2025 season. We definitely need to get that W in week 3 for our home opener at BOA. Despite our collective frustration at not being able to attend TC and then having boring preseason games, ultimately the most important objective of the preseason is to enter Week1 healthy, and we have at least done that. Hopefully the depth we think we have at Oline either shines through or isn't needed. Many other teams are in a bad spot with their offensive lines before the season even starts. For once, we aren't in that situation.

      That roster was billed as a super smart and strong unit for a young QB….until he sucked though.   it didn’t have superstars but it had proven vets that checked well all the safe boxes and it was universally agreed the Panthers were putting him into position to succeed. BY just doesn’t fit a traditional O because he isn’t built like a traditional QB.  And he still doesn’t.   CJ Stroud would have had more success here than Bryce with that cast.   CJ just has the tools that fit the NFL more easily.  Young can find success but I have always argued it would take a Bryce centric plan (which we have never attempted IMO)
