Rivera and the 50 yard kick

This call was a bad one. But Mare was not a good kicker, especially with 50 yarders. If his confidence is shaken enough because of his coach, then this reinforces the fact.

Doesn't matter, you don't pay a kicker to come in and then be afraid to let him kick 50 yarders.....not even talking about mid 50s.

Yeah, probably the wind at his back that would have made the distance for the kicker a non issue.....same wind that probably helped Cam's heave sail.

Of course it matters, with bad kicking your talking about the opposing offence being near midfield instead of the twenty. That's significant, especially given the horrible state of our defense last year.

I'm not going to condone every instance he chose not to field olidno. But when you have a bad defense and a close game, I think the reasoning isn't ridiculous.

Last year....Cam and that O needed help. Gotta let guys actually do what they are paid to do until given a reason not to....and he showed no faith in mare directly after signing him. Yeah, he probably would have missed cuz he sucks but you gotta let him suck first before you take the kicking game out of what is a standard play

I was strictly speaking of last year.

Rivera gave him chances with shorter kicks and he missed more then a few.

Mare proved last season and this preseason that he wasn't a solid kicker, a fact that would only increase the farther the field goal was.

If he misses from shorter why trust him on longer kicks? Giving opposing offenses 20 plus extra yards is not helping Newton.

1) Why are we still talking about olindo mare around here?

2) if your NFL kicker can't be reliable from 50 he shouldnt be on the roster.

3) if your kicker's confidence is so fragile that he can't attempt a 50 yard field goal at the end ofnthe 2nd quarter he shouldnt be on the roster.

4) if your NFL coach (using that term loosely) doesn't attempt a field goal from 50 in that situation, he shouldn't be the coach.

John Kasay should've never been cut until they found a proper replacement. Also our punter kicked a 6 yard punt iirc. The main punt returner has been benched. The Panthers have had a punt blocked this year. And they've also given up a punt return for a touchdown.

And we still have 9 weeks to go.

John Kasay should've never been cut until they found a proper replacement.

Kasay was cutted because his old leg could not hit 50+ FG no more. Seeing how important those are for Rivera paying Mare a trillion was a clever move.

With the new kick off rule and Riveras aversion against 50+ FG there was NO reason at all to cut Kasay.

straw that broke the camels back. By itself, it isn't that big of a deal....but it is one of countless examples of to go in the case of why Rivera isn't a HC.

most impprtant thing is you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. gotta give medlock the oppurtunity whenever i watch oakland play the try to give janikowski 60+ yarders before half or before the game is over. And i know it's a huge difference between medlock and sebastion but come on it's 50 yards

It's all about playing not to lose. He didn't attempt the kick because he didn't want something bad to happen.

As we've seen over the past 5 weeks, the difference between winning and losing is very small. Being able to take points from 50 yards is a big deal.
