Most of us are keyboard GMs here

Recommended Posts

Most of us have different opinions about which direction the Panthers should go in the offseason. So say you get hired as the new GM, what would you do? Rivera an co, are still there, cap is a mess, and we have quite a few holes.

who would you hire as the new HC, or would you give RR another chance to prove his worth.

who would you cut, restructure(attempt to), aquire in draft(top 10 pick), or target it FA

basically anything you would do to turn this team into a perrenial winner

So instead of arguing off topic on every thread, share what you would do with this team here. Looking foward to see everyones views on the subject.

Fire Rivera, Chud and co. Take a hard hard HARD look at McDermott.

Cut AE and Naka.

Look at possible trades for Dwil and Gamble.

And do a lot of restructuring contracts (i.e, Gross).

Dno who the top candidate HC is yet so I'll wait till later. But take Star Lotulelei or Hankins with the first pick. If they're both gone, trade down if possible and take a WR.

you wouldn't keep naka around for special teams?

Quick take:

If Rivera's gone, I'd get rid of the entire coaching staff. You just don't want any remnants of the current regime's mentality around.

My top HC candidates would be the likes of Rick Dennison, Keith Butler, and Winston Moss. Dennison preferably

I'd seriously consider seeing if I could get Cowher or Dungy here though. I know this is redundant and a pipedream but its not out of the equation.

Draft: (1) Star DT, (2) Quinton Patton WR, (4) Uzzi OG

Get another starter OL in the FA and Jairus Byrd

Dump Hangman, Naka, Gary Williams, Edwards, & Brockel at the least

Beason & D'lo must restructure or else

Wouldn't re-sign Clausen

Blow it up.

If you played on the 2003 Superbowl team you are gone. If you are part of Double Trouble and your name is DeAngelo you get cut. Cut all the cheap glaring scrubs....Clausen, Naka, AE, etc.

Get Beason and Gamble to restructure or advise you will try to trade them.

This is a really good topic, but it's just too early to answer many of these questions. Too much depends on how players look for the rest of the year, where our draft position shakes out, etc.

The only definites for me right now are:

1) Rivera and staff are gone. If a new coach wants to retain certain staff members, fine, but it's up to them.

2) Either through draft or FA, upgrade RG and FS. I'm tempted to add WR to the must do list, but would like to at least wait to see how Gettis looks for the rest of the year.

3) DWill has to go to start cleaning up the cap. If a trade arises, take it. If not, make him a June 1st cut.

4) I would ask Cam to commit to a supervised off-season program designed by the new staff. We have to undo what's been done to him and the offense this year and get him back on the fast track.

5) Again it's too early to give details, but we have to do something either with the contract or player in the cases of Gross, Gamble, Beason, and possibly Olsen and Godfrey.

We'll know much more week 17.

Arians/Turner/McDermott

Find a true #1 WR. Smith isn't getting any younger and I see LaFell as a good 2, but not a no.1 guy.

The safety position has been atrocious for years. It must be upgraded, preferably through FA. Also, we could use better depth at cornerback.

Need an anchor at DT. Hankins or Lotulei would help.

As always, look for line depth either through draft or FA. Ditto for specialized pass rushers.

Draft a really good kicker

    • It's funny how the teams with the great QBs stay at or near the top of the league every season.  Yes it is a team game, but the QB has the biggest impact in most NFL football games.
    • Look, no one is ever a perfect player.  Since the QB handles the ball on 100% of plays offensively (unless there's a direct snap to a RB or something), I can absolutely see where they get an outsized blame and gain from what happens at any given snap of a football game.   Theoretically, there shouldn't even be a stat or idea to a 4th quarter comeback or game winning drive because you should already have done that during the game.  Losers!  Right?  Just because you win late doesn't take away the fact you tried to lose the game for your team! I'm not a fan of that opinion, but again, I'm just a moron with a keyboard.   Bryce has limited tools.  Bryce has not inspired the same level of confidence in us as Cam Newton did in year 3.  I certainly get that.  We traded a TON of assets to get Bryce, and we still suck.  (I mean, since we've lost games, we're losers right?) I completely understand that some fans are just unhappy with a limited QB and a team that isn't performing well, unless the other teams are worse losers than we are. I will say this:  Bryce will fight until the end.  Sure, he's has some real loser football.   But in close games, he's doing his best to comeback (even against a winner of prevent D). Now is it better or worse if your QB plays their best ball in the first half and sucks 2nd half so long as they finish with 300 yards, 3 TDs for your fantasy points? Who said stats are for winners anyway?  The Panthers and Bryce has a long way to go.  I'm enjoying the winning right now.  Though I do start each game thinking "how will we fug this up today?" Because it's been such a poo show in the Tepper era.  Will he prove to be a legit starting NFL QB?  Maybe not here as evidence by our record with QBs who were high draft picks.
    • Ive never liked the term game winning drives because they include games where the QB was part of or was the reason the team was behind in the first place. Ive been arguing against this stat since the Delhomme years. It should only count when the QB is out of the equation of reasons why the team fell behind in the first place and is at least half the reason why he led the last drive to give them a lead. It shouldnt count if they just hand it off most of the time and the RB is on fire and they go down and score a TD or FG.
