Bigger Problem: Offense or Defense?

The offense only scored 14 points on Sunday. That other 7 came from the "supportive" defense.

Captain Munnerlyns fumble on special teams directly led to 7 points for the Bucs. His pick 6 was redemption. The Patriots D put up 21 points Sunday. And Tom Brady is their QB. And their D is not well regarded. You guys have the lowest standards i ever seen for a defense. If they make 1 play a game, thats light out. Josh Freeman roasted them when it mattered most.

The defense is tired argument....has anyone actually looked at the time of posession splits for last Sunday's game?

Tampa was on the field for 32:30 and the Panthers for 31:50....40 extra seconds of time posession (which is counting overtime where Tampa got the ball once and then scored). No wonder they were gassed.

Ok, but that was for Tampa...what about for Atlanta? Surely they were gassed which is why they gave up all those yards from the one yard line to end the game. Oh wait, the Panthers TOP 30:06, the Falcons was 29:54.

Surely the Bears game where the defense game up another game winning drive was dominated by Chicago's offense wearing us down. Wait a minute, it shows that the Panthers had the ball for 36:38, and the Bears for 23:22.

This reminds me of the Deshaun Foster is better than Deangelo Williams argument because Deangelo runs against more "tired" defenses.

excuse me, only one idiot is defending the offense. that is king troll

And only a wal mart tarheel fan and a few homers are bragging bout a defense thar sent Panther Nation out of BOA furious on Sunday. We're one of the league leaders in 4th quarter points allowed. They stop doing their job in 4th quarters and instead just watch our QB. Theyre too tired to contribute.

only an inept, illiterate cam nut hugging jock sniffer will continue to make things up, and push blame on everyone else that doesn't concern him because for some reason it really digs deep in you and hurts you so much that his unit can't produce. Carry on. I'm not calling anyone out specifically on offense, but i know good and well if Cam wasn't the QB, you would be ripping the offense too. But instead, you think a unit that can only score 13 points a game is a bigger problem than a unit that gives up 18. Your math fugging sucks.

if you could read and comprehend, you would understand that the thread is asking what is the bigger problem? no one said or is bragging about the defense, but you keep saying it because it your only defense mechanism.

oh if it matters, I live where there are no walmarts. i guarantee you have been to walmart way more than i have.

Except Sunday of course? We scored a measly 21, it wasnt enough. 20 points vs the Bears wasnt enough. 20 against Atlanta wasnt enough. 20 wasnt enough against the Saints. It doesnt matter how much we score, when our opponent buckles down and puts pressure on our D late, they wilt.

We still lean on our O for everything, defense has proven they arent capable of winning games. Theyre a supporting cast who arent very supportive despite having their standards lowered.

lets talk low standards shall we?

10, 28, 7, 28, 3, 19, 22(-7), 21, 14(-7), 14.

only four games out of 10 the offense produced 21+ points.

since your math sucks, that is 40% of the time.

we could even say the pick 6 could reduce that 22 point outting to 15.

if that suffices for you, your standards are as low as they get.

And the two apologists who idolize defensive scrubs still hurl insults. They cant find an argument to defend a unit no one on this board trusts at the end of games. But they proclaim it lights out and think people pay to come see our LBers and safeties get lost in coverage at the end of games. Worst 4th quarter d in the league.

Nobody on this board trusts our defense at the end of games.

Our webmaster who for weeks along with his alts has sung their praises even made a thread about how he knew they would choke on Sunday. He's also absent from this thread. You guys keep up the good fight. Just know at the end of games, most of us want to go for 4th downs because we know our scrubs on defense will help the other teams QB more than our own. This D couldnt stop Josh Freeman with 50 seconds left down 8. LMAO.

points per game made 2011: 25.4 (7th in the league, btw.)

points allowed per game 2011: 26.8 (28th in the league)

points made per game 2012: 18.4 (22nd in league)

points allowed per game 2012: 24.3 (19th in league...not great but still better than last year)

not at all the best way of looking at the big picture, but still tells the same story. you put last year's offense with this year's defense and we win more games.

true, the defense chokes this year just like last year, but the offense has given this team no chance to win in most games.

the defense took solid strides forward. the offense fell into the crapper.

No one on this board trusts this offense in any quarter, especially not the 4th quarter.

At least the defense plays well for 3 quarters the offense plays shitty all game.

Tell me again what rank the Tampa Pass Defense is? Figured with a guy dubbed Superman at QB we would be able to exploit that for more than 14 points.

What a SUPER effort huh? cracks me up

    • You didn’t really address the point, just like you ignored the point about the RBs initially, and saying “they are all lotto picks” is just a really silly reduction because you could say that about literally any player rookie or vet every snap, every game, every year. It is well known that different positions have different hit rates, and I would argue different types of prospects within position groups as well, and that hit rates change the further down in the draft you go. Everybody knows QB is different and that, for example, first round OL have a really high success rate. Using your lotto ticket analogy…again…you are saying a lotto ticket with a 1 in 100 chance of hitting is the exact same thing as a lotto ticket with a 1 in 2 chance of hitting (this is an example, don’t take these odds literally). The point was he is no more of a lotto ticket than the 31yr old receiver coming off a major knee injury, and in my opinion he is better odds with a higher potential “jackpot”. Saying one player is an “lotto ticket” while another isn’t is just not sound logic. You have no idea who will break out, regress, get injured, etc. There are safer bets than others, that’s all. I don’t think Diggs is a safe bet and even if he was, weighing him over all of the Panthers WRs plus 2 1k rushers is just dumb. You can disagree if you want. The list is stupid.
    • Yeah, this is all projections of how it will turn out. Inevitability this list will look ridiculous in a full 2025 sesson hindsight, most likely. Still, I am pretty surprised that so many bristled at being thought of as having very, very lowly ranked WR and TE units. We literally have been for years. All you have to do is just have things stay the same and those are immediately bottom 5 units. It is easy to see why one would be reticent to have lofty expectations in the preseason. Gotta show it first when you are a perennial cellar dweller. That's just life at the bottom.
    • That's my biggest concern with making him the 2C.  You split up the Aho Jarvis bromance that accounted for a lot of points.  If Jarvis excels as a C, it could help the team even more though.
