Kids and Bad Words

swear words are cultural and linguistic relatives, not absolutes. there is nothing intrinsic about a compilation of morphemes that gives it meaning; only context. religious people don't get this and that's why you get this traditional cultural sense of swearing being something you do if you're not a christian. real christians would never swear.

stupid. it's all a relative societal construct.

that said you have to teach your kids about being responsible and know when something is appropriate and when it's not. saying s h i t around your homies =/= saying it in front of grandma.

I disagree with your last statement...

I think "Grandma, this cornbread is the sh1t!" is an acceptable compliment.

My two older boys are 21 and 18 and I don't let them cuss around me. My 21 year old Is pretty good about not doing it but my 18 year old has a potty mouth. Incidentally, he is the one that has been in trouble with the law and smokes pot four days a week. Coinicidence? Probably not.

I am 44 years old and don't cuss in front of my parents or in-laws... I respect them to much to do so.

I feel trashy and feel like I'm being disrespectful to others if I use inappropriate language. There are more creative words to use rather than speaking with rotten language

I was raised in a house where my own parents used the worst language around anyone. We were permitted to speak however we wished but even from a very early age I didn't care for those words. My brother's first words were F you M'effer. I tend to use filtered language, I'll use abbreviations and substitutes. Everyone is titled to their own opinion and I don't tend to judge one way or another because its not my job.

I don't shelter my kid, I teach her appropriate names for body parts. In our house the word Dick is a man's name, not a part of the body.

LOL!

Wow let me ask you something man, you ever drink alcohol? Because I've sure seen my fare share of swearing, fighting, beating women, drunk driving, due to alcohol. Never from marijuana.

Don't go fugging blaming that on weed. Your being a typical closed-minded, ignorant old guy.

Peace.

Just to follow along with the Bwood/Shane Walsh trend, m'ask you somethin', man. What makes you think that having a "potty mouth" and trouble with the law and pot smoking have ANYTHING to do with each other?

From personal experience and witnessing kids, I'll go so far as to say that telling your grown men (they can be drafted to go fight and die in a war....they're men) what they can and cannot say around you and thus cuffing them and controlling them could LEAD to that sort of rebellious, trouble with the law and pot smoking.

I cuss like a fuging sailor, and around my 65 year old father and mother. I cuss around anybody. Why? Because I'm a grown ass man living in America, where I have the goddamn right to speak however the fug I want. I curb my language around small kids, because I don't want to influence anybody's kids and cause a scene. But around the kids in my own family...say what the hell I want, as does everybody else. Best part? The VAST majority of the kids (i'm talking 9 to 15 years old) don't cuss because they simply choose not to. Not because they're told "don't do that". In fact, they're encouraged to speak their mind. But they don't because they simply CHOOSE to not cuss, and that is just fuging dandy.

Btw, I mentioned the entire above paragraph just to say I'm not far from being a police officer. Coincidence? Probably not.

I've always believed it's not the words themselves. Rather, it's how they are strategically and carefully placed in the conversation that makes all the difference in the world. The effect of a "curse word" or other word that society somehow deemed as inappropriate is derived from its use, context and delivery.

An F-bomb is just another F-bomb. Teaching your kid how to deliver one with the utmost impact, correct voice inflection and context could mean the difference between Harvard Law and High School Delinquency 101.... know what I mean?

Course, I have no kids...... that would be my disclaimer if you try to blame it on me later.

Basically what we've all been saying. ANY word can be deemed a "curse word" if used in a very derogatory way. Saying "fug yeah!" or "this dinner is the poo!" is fine. Saying "go fug yourself" or "this dinner tastes like poo" is kinda fuged up to say and something you teach teach them not to say. No different than basic manners with anything else, really. You tell a kid they can't say or do something, they will invariably do it at some point and then you'll get pissed off. When it comes to drugs, take a hard stand. When it comes to cussing...it's just fuging silly to flip out about it. It hurts no one, except for your delicate, old fashioned sensibilities and your fear that society has placed on you by "protecting" the public from vulgar language and nudity (seriously, the fact that this country has terrible self-image when it comes to their bodies is NOT surprising to me. I knew guys on my football team in high school who flipped out that I got naked in the locker room. Even before I did that though, some guys just would NOT change in front of everybody...in high school...in fuging FOOTBALL...).

My daughter cusses more than my son. I honestly think she does it most of the time just to get a rise out of us.

You're probably right. I knew kids growing up who cussed just to get attention, especially in larger families (3+ kids, plus having cousins around all the time). We all know how it goes, though. You cuss in your teens because it's "cool" and because you get attention, negative or not. You cuss as an adult (at least, I do), because sometimes it's the most succinct way of expressing myself. For instance, saying "this is dumb" does not have nearly the same impact as "this is fuging dumb". Or, "forget this" does not have the impact of, "fug this". fug is probably my favorite word, for that reason. Of course, time and place. There is a time to be professional, though. I've heard people, while working, cuss around customers/clients. Don't know that I necessarily agree with that, strictly from a social formality standpoint.

She's 14, so I think it's the "cool" thing going on. To be honest, we have more things to worry about than her saying fug all the time. Like a boy much older than her sending her pics of his dick.

The hell? ...I swear, if I ever have a daughter, I am in trouble. the first time something like that happens, I freak out.

Yeah. It happened. He's lucky he has a few months before he turns 18, and that my son is 18. My daughter didn't send him any pics. I'd never before checked my daughter's texts, but something told me one night to do it. And that's what I found; a pic of his dick.

    • Biiiiiig eyeroll on this.  First, Look at historical stats of the most recent historical great DBs.  I plucked 3, Revis, Sherman, and Norman (cuzz he was our guy).  Combined post age 30, there are TWO pro bowls between those 3 and wanna get this...ZERO seasons with 16 games started.  ALL missed time.  It is RARE that Corners survive that long in the NFL and its about time we started recognizing this fact.  Jaycee is a good bet because it hasnt been anything seriously devastating injury wise, and with his sample size he could and should be an incredible piece for the panthers through age 30. Jaire kinda flops on the other side, hes 28...so hes under 30, but he wants his payday before it comes up, hes also been injury prone lately.  Bulk of the contract will be on opposite side of 30.  Will both of these guys help us be better in 2026?  SURE!  No doubt, but the question is, will these guys help us past 2026...not sure. The investment isnt worth the risk, nor would the ROI be anywhere close to worth it.  Neither guy is moving us from a 6-8 win team to a 8-10 team, period. My point is we're in this state a 6-8 win team IMO and he projects us as  a 4-6 win team.  EVEN if we think Jaire or Ramsey will make us a 6-8 win team, it in NO WAY is worth the money or capital to move that much just to suck kinda less.
    • I assumed he was retiring but apparently he plans on playing multiple more seasons.  Florida is gonna have trouble holding onto everyone.  Happens to all teams that have that much success.
    • I hate Marchand, but if he became a free agent.....
