What happens if we change defensive schemes...?

So, we all look at the Draft and the needs we have right now. OG, OT, WR, S, CB, etc. But, how will that all change if we switch defensive schemes to a 34 system.

Now, before everyone freaks out, it's entirely possible that we do switch to the 34. If you bring in a guy like Bruce Arians (who I really want), you will get a defensive coordinator along the lines of Keith Butler (if you can pull him away from Pittsburgh) who knows nothing but a 34, zone-blitz system. David Shaw, who a lot of people here are crazy over, a guy like Derek Mason or Randy Hart could come with Shaw, both of whom know a 34 system.

The list goes on: Vic Fangio, Russ Grimm, Ray Horton, Keith Butler, Winston Moss, all of these guys have taught a 34 system or have been apart of teams with 34 systems (meaning they would probably bring guys with them that change our team to the 34.)

If we were to switch to a 34, what would our needs look like? We would obviously need a pass rusher on the outside, from the Ryan Kerrigan OLB position. We would need another ILB, to go along with the coverage skills of Kuechly. We would need DEs to fit the system.

No need for another ILB. Got Kuechly and Beason. Then CJ and Hardy become worthless to us. They can't transition to full time OLBs. And both are to good at passrushing to be wasted as 5 techs. Basically we'd have to get rid of some guys and hope we could fill all the spots through FA or the draft. Our D would most likely take a step back. Don't like the idea. Our D is a couple players away from being very good, as is.

I'm not sure I like the idea either, but a lot of the free agent coaches are 34 guys or will bring in 34 guys.

It's definitely something to think about.

switching to a 3-4 would only put this team even further behind. Ideally I liked to hire an offensive minded head coach that can develop a qb and keep Rivera as DC. that would keep continuity on defense and give us a great coordinator

Changing now is completely unnecessary because we have versatile players like CJ and Hardy. I don't care which scheme a team uses, if they can get to the QB with four men rushing and sometimes three, you shouldn't mess with it. Blitzing may be "cool" but it's better to send less people if you can.

The defense is pretty much a hybrid at this point. Add an all-around dominant DT and their three man rush is going to be deadly.

I think it's doable now with Beason and Luke. CJ could play the 9 and Hardy the 5, you could also use TD and his speed as a rush OLB. Ware doesn't do anything that our DE's can't do.

We could draft someone like T'eo, or Jarvis Jones to make it even better. However, I think we'd have a hole at the 0. Hankins could play the 0 I think, Star looks more like a 3 to me.

My primary concern is finding a free safety and then replacing Ron Edwards. If Gamble is gone then I think that's another need, but I like our top 3 CB's right now and think we'd be ok with another year under their belts.

On offense I see RG as the top need and WR 2/eventual WR1 as a very close second. I'm hoping Amini adjusts at solidifies the LF spot and if so, I think that will help Gross. I like Hangartner but he was not very good at RG and would be better as our top interior back up.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
