Why do you need to give a coach three years to prove himself?

6-10 last year and will probably finish the same this year as sweeping the Aints is unlikely. Of course a miserable showing against Da Raiders would not be a surprise either.

Rivera has shown me nothing in his willingness to utilize the strengths of the roster Hurney provided him or in his ability to best put that talent in a position to win on the field.

Did Hurney and Rivera ever discuss how to put the Cap Dollars Hurney spent to work on the field and translate that to Ws? Doubtful he'll do it any better for the next GM either.

The verdict is in, it's time for Ron to go. He's done nothing to deserve a 3rd year.

I completely agree with you. I rather have anybody other then Rivera. The guy is mediocre at best.

Does it not bother you that our QB has to have a flawless game to get a win? Does it not bother you that our gazillion dollar backfield could not find a way to run the ball in the offense we employed early in the year? Does it not bother you that Hurney had to be sent packing and JR had to read Rivera the riot act to get us to change to a more balanced offense?

Do these things not give you pause for thought?

I think newton could have thrown a pick last Sunday and we would have won. The truth is that most of the time when newton threw a pick he let it bother him for the rest of the game which is a big reason he doesn't have very many game winning drives since he got here.

Does he bother me that we have essentially squandered all the money we spent on Williams and Stewart by under utilizing them. I guess that is a rhetorical question if you have been reading my posts lately.

As for Hurney, he was sent packing because he has failed to produce a winning season for 4 years which is 2 years longer than Rivera has been here. And honestly I don't know what JR and Rivera talked about. Were you there to hear it or have you heard from someone who was. I thought so.

Actuallly there are things that give me pause but those are not the major ones for me. For example explain to me how we can have 18 guys on IR last year and we have 17 on IR this year with 2 games left. That is 35 guys over the 2 year including roughly 10 starters. Given the close losses and bad luck we have had, is there some kind of bad luck juju that has followed Rivera and McDermott here. I wonder how they can be playing at such a high level starting guys who just 2 weeks ago were on the practice squad.

I wonder why Newton has suddenly got it after 25 games and why it took so long. I wonder how we can put up our biggest offensive showing the past 2 games without LaFell. Stewart or Gettis being big parts.

Obviously we are looking at different things.....

Rivera by and large made the same kind mistakes in close game situations this year than he did last year.

Of course we're going to win when we jump to 30 point leads before the 4th quarter. However, this doesn't answer the question of how good is Rivera's team when the chips are down. He still hasn't shown the requisite decision making competency I need to see from him to have any confidence in him and we're at the tail end of year 2.

This is the best post on Rivera that I've seen on here thus far.

Being a front runner doesn't make you a good coach. Beating a team that's far worse than your's (and one that you've watched the offense over and over, thus you have to know the play calls) does not make a good coach. Beating a team that obviously didn't come to play does not make you a good coach.

Making good play calls, having good game plans (i.e., not getting your ass handed to you by RBs coming in off their couch or ones that haven't started since high school...), knowing when to be aggressive and when to pull in the reins to win the game... Those are things that make you a good head coach.

These are not things I've seen from Rivera.

Yeah, we have a different view on things, but that's okay. It would be a boring world otherwise.

As to the IR question, some of it is probably due to us being out of contention early in the last few seasons. So if you are already in week 8, for example, and a guy has a 6 week injury, you are probably better off getting a look at a younger guy and just putting the starter on the shelf. It's not like you have to save him for the playoffs. Some of the guys we've put on IR probably could have come back later in the year had we been in a position in which it would matter.

And finally, I don't get it either on some of these new guys performing like vets. DJ Campbell has played as well at SS in his limited time as Godfrey, if not better. Dockery seems to be outperforming Norman by a good bit. Thomas has made the loss of Gamble barely noticeable. Are these young guys really that good, or is something else going on (maybe it's just fresh legs late in the year)?

Completely off topic comment right here, but this is honestly one of the best threads I have read on here in god knows when. Tons of good discussion backed up with hard selling points and good information from both sides with little to no uninformed idiots just spewing crap out of their mouths. Both sides are giving me pause to think critically about the situation at hand. I still am on the fence on the thread's topic, but for seriously, Great job guys.

It's what I dreamed a message board could actually be like...

    • Jalen Carter came into camp out of shape too. That was part of the reason he dropped considering he was thought of as the better defensive player pre-draft activities. It’s not a good sign when you don’t look great but it’s definitely premature.
    • We won 5 with the worst defense in the history of defenses.  I think free agency and our draft puts us over 6.5.
    • Leaning towards just ordering this tonight, but now I have no idea on size. Has anyone bought a bunch of jerseys in the last few years and can convey how the Game vs Limited vs Reebok versions all fit? These are both Mediums... The white one here is a Reebok one from 2010, and was when they had the "+2 length" on the tag and it was the version with the stitched numbers instead of iron on... the blue one is from 2022 and is the F.U.S.E Limited version also with stitched stuff, not the "game jersey" with the ironed on numbers/letters that they have the T-Mac jerseys in. The old one fits me fine, the blue one was always a tad snug on me, particularly in the shoulders I'm leaning going with a Large based on the CMC, but for all I know, that is made with a tighter cut due to the higher "limited" level and the "game" ones they have for T-Mac are cut more like a T-Shirt and thus will fit more like the old white one I have here, not sure. (and yes, I already tried going to a sporting goods store here to hopefully try on a Lions jersey to see, but they don't have any right now)
