NFL Coaching / GM News

So in reality Arizona is down to interviews with McCoy and Reid, Reid will probably be during the week. So they might never make it to that flight to Denver after all. lol

Also, that's now multiple people reporting that Beane is in consideration in Carolina to keep the GM job. Seems very likely he'll at least get an interview with JR and Accorsi. That's now CBS, ESPN and Yahoo reporting the same thing. I'd wager it's coming from someone other then Beane's agent at this point.

Depends on who LaCanfora is referring to as his source. Wouldn't surprise me to hear it's Pat Yasinskas (ditto Jason Cole). "Sources" also often refer to someone's agent or another reporter. Jay Glazer has a running joke that ESPN often misspells his name when they cite him. Rather than spelling it "Glazer" they spell it "Sources".

Joe Person referred to him as 'a longshot".

I still don't even see him getting an interview.

I'm really starting to get concern with this Beane situation. Yahoo and CBS has reported this. I haven't seen anything from ESPN but from Pat about Beane. If JR do this too us I don't know if I could ever stop being mad at this organization. I don't think Beane should be GM and Rivera shouldn't return. It will be a disaster.

I don't think Beane gets the job, I still think it comes down to the NYG connection and either Ross or Gettlemen get the job, but you can't completely discredited four websites that are all saying the same thing. Also on his Radio interview Patty Y made it sound like his information cam from either JR / Accorsi. He said they weren't saying a whole lot, but one thing he did get was that Beane did have a shot at the job.

He gets an interview, but not the Job.

Here's some info from the Charlotte Observer that might have went under the radar here. Here's the three current candidates here in Carolina for the GM job.

With former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi consulting on the GM search, the Panthers' interest in Ross was anticipated. Carolina also could consider Giants senior pro personnel analyst Dave Gettleman.

Panthers interim GM Brandon Beane also is expected to get an interview.

Is anyone worried about that?

The roster is filled with holes,

Perfect for putting one's stamp on the team.

the cap situation is a mess,

Not FUBAR though, plus it gives a new GM some cushion for a few years.

and the owner is a crazy old control freak.

This differs from other billionaires how?

Yet the mere presence of Cam will keep expectations high.

So a major piece of the puzzle is installed.

I wouldn't touch this job if I was an up and comer.

Thus showing why you aren't an up & comer.

Well, I know fully support whatever we do pending we keep Rivera. I don't think Rivera is great....but think Cam could be. So it is more a Cam gamble than Rivera one.

New coaching sets him back. Cam IMO doesn't have the long window of more traditional passers.

Yo Scott, this woudln't be the first time that a consultant was hired and his recommendation not used. It wouldn't be the last, either. I read that Accorsi recommended Dave Gettlemen for a GM job before (Browns I think) and they went in another direction. I think they fired that other direction yesterday with Pat Shurmur.

Just read Beane is getting an interview. The ball is starting to gain momentum. I hope I'm wrong about this.

See above.

If he gets an interview, it should be only to pat him on the back before sending him back to his old job.

So no, I'm still not taking it seriously.

The Panthers can't afford to make mistakes. It would be a mistake to hire Beane and retain Rivera.

Could also argue it would be a mistake to set Cam Newton backwards....

That could be a bigger deal than the importance of bringing in a slightly better "game day manager" than Rivera. Bc X's and O's....Rivera's got that.

    • Congratulations do they know who the father is?
    • In my opinion Fitterer was probably right about not paying McCaffrey. Now not wanting to "pay RBs" in my opinion isn't something you want to set in stone, to me it all comes down to the individual.
    • Maybe I'm just not understanding, but everywhere that I have read says that signing bonuses go against the cap prorated by as much as five years. The following example uses Andrew Luck's rookie contract as an example. "Take Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck signed a four-year contract with the Colts worth $22.1 million and included a $14.5 million signing bonus. Rather than a $14.5 million cap hit in 2012, the Colts spread out his signing bonus over the life of his contract. The hit against the cap would be $3.625 million per year over four years instead of a direct cap hit of $14.5 million directly in 2012. This gave the Colts more leverage and cap flexibility in signing other players." https://www.the33rdteam.com/nfl-signing-bonuses-explained/ I don't know why some of you think that signing bonuses aren't counted against the cap over the length of the contract, but whatever.   "The bonus with a signing is usually the most garish aspect of a rookie contract. Bonus is the immediate cash players receive when they ink a deal. It factors into the cap, but only for the whole contract duration, in terms of salary cap calculations. In the case of Bryce Young’s $24.6 million signing bonus, that’s prorated to approximately $6.15 million per season over a four-year deal. This format allows teams to handle the cap and provides rookies with some short-term fiscal stability, which is important given the high injury risk in this league." https://collegefootballnetwork.com/how-rookie-contracts-work-in-the-nfl/ I understand how signing bonuses can be a useful tool in order to manage the cap, and as one of the article suggests, signing bonuses may become important if you have a tight cap, but the bill is always going to come due. I'm not necessarily referring to you Tuka, but it seems to me that others simply don't want to understand that fact which is why they're reacting to what I'm saying negatively. How odd. In any event, I have a better general understanding of why signing bonuses are used now, and it's generally to fit salaries under the cap. Surely players, whether they be rookies or not, love a signing bonus because they get a good portion of their money up front. This in turn gives them more security and probably amounts to tax benefits as well. I also understand why teams would not want to use signing bonuses, particularly for players or draftees who have a higher probability of being gone before a contract even ends.
