NFL Coaching / GM News

TV actually makes a pretty valid point. The cap is going to make things rougher next year (Thanks a lot, Marty).

That said, Rivera has shown the ability to coach the team under less than optimal circumstances (i.e. half the roster injured) so we'll see what happens next season.

I'd add that other teams have shown it is possible to field a competitive team even when you're not breaking the bank.

I agree it's going to be rough to get around it but my point was we go through this every year and yet it is always settled by the time the season rolls around. The cap has proven to be very easy to maneuver around. That is why Washington routinely always managed to have so much cap space. Heck, even last year when we were supposedly in cap hell, we came out with Dwan Edwards signed who performed great and snatched up Tolbert, Murphy (albeit via trade), re-signed Hangartner, and brought in Nakamura (which, well, was not a good thing, but still).

And I don't expect to see some drastic cuts like he was making it out to be, as if Rivera we just going to be handed nothing. The only two players (that make a reasonable impact on the team anyway) that might get cut are Williams and Gamble, and we don't need Williams and were without Gamble anyway.

Seems to me that having Richardson make the coaching decision for me in my first year would be a positive instead of a negative. It essentially gives me one year to acclimate and figure out the cap dilemma without compounding that with a new coach or system and making sure that I had the personnel to run that scheme. If they do well he has something to build on. If they suck then he has no blame in that he wasn't part of the decision. He gets a pass for this year and can fire Rivera and pick his own guy next year when other fires have been put out. If the Panthers reach the playoffs then he looks like a genius for sticking with Rivera even when again he had little to do with it. A win/win unless he also finds out that he won't have say in the decisions going forward either which is a deal breaker. I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

well when you put it like that.....

And someone made a great point earlier. It is interesting that for all the hype Marc Ross is getting, he doesn't seem to be the favorite for any GM job which is very reminiscent of Rivera. Either he's a really poor interviewer or just not nearly as good of a candidate as he's being made out to be.

Jags interviewed him yesterday and have reportedly crossed him off their list (posted more in the candidates thread).

But with the new GM he will have to draft and add players via free agency for Rivera. What's the point of doing all that if next year Rivera doesn't make the playoffs which isn't guaranteed anyway? We pretty much wasted time, money, and a draft class if they don't fit the new coach system. We are starting over with a new GM, don't you think it would be fair if we gave him a clean slate and able to pick his own guy and build now?

Gettleman's age scares me. Should that be a concern?

I don't think so, honestly. there are plenty of older guys still working in the NFL.

Yea, He's got some strong ties to the NJ area. Plus he's already worked for the Jets before.

His old buddy Polian was apparently propping him up big time too.

I included him in the list of candidates because Adam Caplan reported that Accorsi was checking him out. I'm beginning to think now that he never got to the point of being a serious candidate.

    • Incorrect, I have watched us consistently over quite a number of years. When I say Cam relied on athleticism, I simply mean his dual threat style and athleticism overshadowed the deficiencies in the passing game (his own or those created by the system).  Now I wouldn’t disagree that our OCs over that time were not amazing and arguably held him back, but correct me if I’m wrong, Cam had a habit of locking onto his receivers and overthrowing them. Gettleman even drafted two big receivers - Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess - to give Cam receivers with a big catch radius.  Again, correct me if I’m wrong, but Cam had some mechanical issues. For example, the reliance on arm strength over touch and his footwork often led to him throwing off the back foot. There were many debates on these boards about his mechanics, with far more knowledgeable posters than I braking down what he needed to improve on. End of the day, I was as big a Cam fan as the next person, but he did have his shortcomings as a passer. Had he played under someone like Sean McVay or a similar offensive guru, with a high quality QB coach, then I’m sure they would have ironed out the kinks and he would have been far more dangerous and successful than he was. And that’s a scary thought of what he could have been under the likes of a McVay!
    • It's true that we are not scoring at a much higher clip than the Saints. They're averaging ~18.4 with Shough and in that same span we're averaging ~19, so pretty close, despite Bryce having better TD numbers over that period. Both our teams are a far, far cry from the NFL average of 23.3...
    • I like when this big kat is going crazy panther fan and not the pat jersey betting against persona.
