Must address WR

I know the predominant topic is Chud and the OC spot right now, and many share these same sentiments, but I just think it is vital (but perhaps very difficult) that we address the WR position and get a player of real impact this off-season, whether through the draft and/or free-agency. When your franchise is this many years into its existence, and the 4th all-time leading receiver is Mark Carrier with 2547 career yards, and you have an aging Smitty along with a young franchise QB, you simply must address this position and right now- not later- now!

If we don't do something significant about this position during the off-season, I'll be furious. I know we have other needs that have to be tended to, but I don't see how we can go another year without bringing in a talented wideout.

Anyway, who do you guys want?

In the draft I like Justin Hunter, but I'm worried about his durability. I like Keenan Allen too, but I'm not wowed enough by any of the WR crop to spend a first rounder on them. I don't know enough about the guys projected to go in later rounds to really know who might be a good fit for us.

As for the FA route, I don't want Bowe. Wallace and Jennings will likely be too expensive.

It seems like this is going to be a tough problem to really fix properly before next season imo. What would you guys like to see happen before the 2013 kickoff, and do you think anything substantial will be done at this position?

I don't think it is our strongest position with regards to depth, but if we upgrade our other needs and stayed with our current WR's, I think we could still be a playoff team. Smitty is still a #1 WR despite what anyone says and I was content with Lafell and Murphy as options 2A & 2B.

If we do choose to address WR as a position of need, I would like for us to first try to get a WR with our 2nd round pick. I am partial to Nuke Hopkins, but there should be some decent WR talent left when we are selecting at #44.

If we go the free agent route, I think D. Bowe would be the best overall option if we could afford him, and Mike Wallace would be the best overall option to compliment Smitty with a speedster on opposite side.

I agree, but for how much longer? Additionally I think it would benefit Smitty, as well as the entire offense, to strengthen the WRs playing around him.

Murphy is pretty turrible. He is good for one tough catch a season. Lafell just will never be a #1. Gettis, who knows if Rivera even lets him out of the dog house.

Olsen is basically the #2 WR.

We are one Steve Smith injury away from being in big trouble at receiver.

Ideally I'd like us to find a way to draft Patterson.

Take a WR in the 4th and hope it turns out to be brandon marshall?

WR is nowhere near as big a concern as Oline is so I'm not really worried about it. Right now I'm fine with Lafell as the number 2 (third receiving option behind smith and olsen) and Murphy/Gettis at 3/4 isn't the worst thing in the world. I think our best route down the line with Cam is to let him marinate and figure out what he likes in receivers and let him convey that to our GM and coaching staff, then draft guys with those attributes. Kind of like what Manning did with Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie.

My guess is Gettis didn't do anything wrong to be in the doghouse but was more likely completely out of game shape for keeping off his knee for so long. Could have also decided to shelf him to prevent reinjury since when he came back we were eliminated from playoff contention.

I hope that's the case.

Great post totally agree.

    • Does this mean only topics from within the last year or any topics with posts from the last year? i.e. if there are any old threads we feel should be kept around for whatever reasons, would a bump of that thread before the update ensure it's kept around in full or do the posts from more than a year old still disappear?
    • I'm more intrigued at him becoming our future LG. There were some people who thought he was better suited to be a guard in the NFL to begin with.  Then if Freeling ends up being a legit LT, moving Ickey to LG could give us an incredibly strong left side of our OL for years to come. Ickey has only played on the Left side his whole career, both in college and the NFL, so I just wonder if keeping him on the left side, even if shifting inside, would be better than putting him outside on the right side. Just hoping him growing up a Panthers fan will make him want to stay here and move positions than enter FA so he can stay at LT somewhere else, particularly since LT is the big money position on the OL, so he likely can get paid more by someone else to play LT than play LG or RT here for us.
