Beane was never a candidate

That's pretty clear when you read this team site article discussing the GM search.

Accorsi helps Panthers arrive at Gettleman

Pertinent excerpts...

Shortly after Hurney's departure, Accorsi – the chairman of the NFL's General Manager Committee – arranged an initial meeting with Richardson, team president Danny Morrison and interim general manager Brandon Beane in Hershey, Penn.

So Beane was at the initial meeting where they talked about what they wanted to get in a permanent GM, unlikely if he were actually expected to be in the mix.

"I have a place in Hershey, so we had an all-day meeting," Accorsi said. "My position at that point was to find out exactly what they wanted. What kind of general manager did they want?

"They wanted a classic, football-oriented general manger, someone who had a background in personnel but also as an executive."

These are the criteria Accorsi was given. Having no background in personnel, Beane would have been excluded from the process immediately.

After the meeting, Accorsi began compiling a list of people that fit the description. The Panthers and Accorsi then discussed the candidates on the shortlist for about six weeks as the regular season wound down.

"We could not talk to anybody with an NFL club until the season was over," Accorsi said. "We discussed the candidates, and the minute they were eligible to talk to us we would start interviewing."

With more than 40 years of NFL experience at his disposal, Accorsi recommended several people he knew well. But he also made a concerted effort to research individuals who he had no prior experience with.

"There were several I knew well, several I worked with," Accorsi said. "I wanted to be completely fair to the people I didn't know and if the process nominated them through recommendations, then I wanted to make sure they were included.

Good info on the process. Clear that Accorsi did his due diligence and didn't just rely on old friends (even though that's who ultimately got the job).

"The list was narrowed and refined and it finally came to the four that we interviewed."

Accorsi flew to Charlotte on Monday, and the interview process began the next day.

That'd be Ross, Dawson, Popp and Gettleman. So no interview for Beane.

No idea where Pat Yasinskas - and later, Joe Person - got the info indicating that he was an option, but it seems pretty obvious based on how events played out that it wasn't accurate. It's possible Person got it from Yasinskas. Guess maybe Yasinskas got it from the same source that told him Dave Gettleman had never been a college scout.

In your opinion, do you think Beane is the heir apparent?

I doubt it. For now, it looks like Beane is going back to his old job.

If it were to be Beane, then however long Gettleman stays (let's say, 5-6 years) would be however much time Beane would have to learn to be a personnel evaluator. And how's that gonna happen if he's back in his old logistics job.

For that matter, why go that route since when the time comes there will surely be people available who will have more than twice the evaluator experience already?

My guess is someone else who joins the FO this offseason will wind up in the "hier apparent" role.

Beane was just a placeholder.

dont know about Mr Scots opinion but this could be the last gm JR hires if things go reasonably well.

JR may be holding his last bowel movement for all we know.

This bothers me as we have no idea who the owner will be after he passes. I assume his sons are in his will but have a sinking feeling the football team ain't in there when it comes to them.

Close... Person got it from PY and PY pulled it out of his ass. SOP for those two Yahoos.

When Yasinskas was reporting that Mike McCoy was a lock for the OC job despite others reporting that Fox was leaning toward Jeff Davidson, his source was McCoy's agent (not exactly an unbiased source).

Source here could be an agent too. Who knows?

His source for reporting that Gettleman had never been a college scout? Lack of basic research, I suppose.

As someone else reminded me in the "Accorsi thoughts" thread, Yasinskas' initial report didn't even spell Gettleman's name right.

Gee, Pat Y wrong again? Say it ain't so!

With that said, Beane is a rising star in the organization. Who knows how far he can climb in the coming years.

people feeding the beane as gm notions are the same ones feeding the beane rising star/heir apparent stories.

i wouldn't dwell on it.

    • Hello there.  We are rolling out a complete overhaul of the Huddle. Why: Frankly this site is so old the database and antiquated software has gotten unmanageable. There is not much we can do to fix anything anymore. The new site is wired for the future including getting back in the app stores.    When:  Hopefully by early July so that we can test and recover things. After the migrations we will still have access to the old site behind the scenes to bring over anything we missed.    Wait, will I lose anything?  We are only bringing over topics and posts from the past calendar year. The tinderbox is being set on fire and rolled off a cliff. All it ever did was made this place feel horrible all while changing approximately 0 minds in 20 years.  The new site will only have 4 forums to keep this joint Carolina team sports focused. Panthers, Hornets, Charlotte FC, Hurricanes.    Improved Moderation  This is a clean slate for us, as such if you are a problematic member (you know who you are) that enjoys getting banned and coming back, we aim to make it much more difficult for you. However, upon the move your slate is clean. Take advantage of it.  We would love to get this place back to what it used to be. Nice folks with friendly banter centered around Carolina sports. We will be using the BAN HAMMER liberally to rid this place of people who aren't interested in that or try to drag the new site back into the gutter.   New Features With new tech comes new features we will be rolling out over the rest of the year.    What about the damn ads?  Fewer and less problematic ads. Again, new tech allows for this. Without ads this place gets shut down.    What if I can't login?  If you can't login due to not being able to reset your password from the login screen, email [email protected] with your username and we will get you squared away.    Let me know if you have any specific questions.
