Shula promoted to OC

In the past five seasons, which of these guys has had more than one GOOD season as an OC? Jackson had one, Shurmur had none, and Norv hasn't been an OC since 2006 when his 49ers went 7-9, never outscoring any team by more than 14 points.

I'm not saying that Shula is the second coming, but let's all take a breath and have a little reality check.

the reality is that we had an OC leave the team and get replaced by some guy that was so bad at the job he hasn't had another for 12 years.

and we did it for stability's sake. not because he was good, but because we wanted to maintain the status quo.

that's the reality of the situation.

everyone's best defense of him is that we don't know that he's still as bad as he was over a decade ago. wow. talk about low standards, but apparently that's what being a good fan is.

what do you expect him to say? no way anyone on the team says anything negative about it. he's a likable guy.

His record in 4 years at Alabama was 26-23.

His record in 4 tries against Auburn 0-4.

As head coach at Alabama, your mission is clear- beat Auburn. He did not succeed.

That Alabama - Auburn rivalry makes me want to blow the state of Alabama off the map. Never seen such stupidity so rampant in a state in my life. And for the record I despise the Duke/UNC obsessions too.

Well, Id like him to say "I love this hire and he's the man for this job". I don't expect him to bash the guy but I would like to get an idea of Cam's true feeling on the situation. If he made a statement, we could get a feeling of what he is thinking.

That's not reality, that's speculation.

The reality is that we've gone with an unproven guy instead of one of three dubious retreads, none of which have had a winning season as an OC in the last five years. So all four of them have that in common. What Shula has over them is an established relationship with our franchise QB and the confidence of the current staff. You may not like it, but you're not exactly making a great case for doing anything to the contrary.

I know shula's history and I dont believe he is the guy for the job and dont put much faith in speculation.

That would qualify a lot of QB coaches to get a chance at OC.

That is fact, but it was also 12 years ago, and not what I was referring to.

You are speculating that they hired him to keep the status-quo, and because he's likeable, etc. because that's all the shitty sportswriters and other armchair GMs on this board can come up with as we descend into total meltdown.

Did it never occurred to you that he might actually be the best option out of a group of guys that don't have a winning season between them in the last five years?

I know it's not the best scenario, but it's not like we passed over one of the Harbaugh's or something to promote him!

I think having Shula for Cam and the passing game, and Skipper for the running game has the potential to be a really fun combination. I don't know for sure, but nothing's guaranteed.

You are right..the move is better than hiring Pat Shumer. No one pecking away at a keyboard interviewed the coaches or worked with Shula. Maybe this, despite very lukwarm success for Shula is the best move the Panthers had with the coaches presented.
