Let's talk about restructuring player contracts!

In our current situation, I think its a bad idea! By no means am I a capologists and this is why I am putting this up for discussion, but I can't help to think Payday loan when hearing of a player restructuring his contract to clear cap space! Nobody is taking a paycut, we are just promising more guaranteed money and bigger pay on the back side to reduce said player's cap hit in the current year. I feel like the constant restructuring has helped put us in our current cap hell!

Am I looking at this all wrong? Seems like that if we are overpaying a player and the contract has grown through the sign on bonus(unlike our RBs) then its better to just cut the player if no trades are offered. Thoughts?

It is defiantly a BAD idea to take a horrible contract and just push the cap hit to future seasons. That's what Hurney would do time and time again, and its a big reason why we'd enter every offseason over the cap. Players need to earn their money or take a pay cut, otherwise just cut them loose.

Everything I've heard from Gettleman indicates that he's not going to just GIVE money away to fan favorites the way Hurney did. There will defintly be some transition period while our new GM deals with the contracts already on the books but contract valuations are probably the one of the best attributes of our new GM.

the only thing i feel confident in saying is that the rule is more than likely going to be, if you can be replaced by someone cheaper without moving backwards, you're probably gone. there will probably only be a couple "untouchables" there. most everyone on that roster is fair game. that said...i don't expect a whole lot of turnover. at least not this year.

the whole loyalty card is, i hope, a thing of the past. loyalty to the organization and providing the best talent above loyalty to players.

So I am looking at things correct? I am right in your opinion to cringe at the idea of restructuring gamble and gross with the absence of a huge pay cut?

It may sting a little bit with favorites of mine potentially leaving, but I'm ready for this franchise to take that step. Gettleman will make some tough choices but I'm behind him 100%. This is what we needed, a man who is unbiased to make important decisions.

I just pray double trouble will end up staying and we utilize them. If we continue to run the ball out of shotgun all the time and ignore a power run game, I want them to go and succeed elsewhere..

A couple of guys' contracts basically make them "untouchable". Beason and Williams in particular. You don't really save much by cutting either. Gonna be awfully tough to convince either to take a significant pay cut due to the guaranteed money in their deals. Their agents know that the Panthers are stuck between a rock and a hard place due to those contracts.

Not sure what the Gross and Gamble deals look like, perhaps they're candidates for a restructure? James Anderson is another guy who needs to restructure or go. Add Godfrey to that list too.

Ugh... so many ugly contracts. Hurney Magic!

I have no problem with releasing a player if there is

a. A better player behind him

b. The contract is so bad and so loaded that it would be cap suicide to even restructure

c. The player is grossly overpaid (ie 40% or more to comparable player).

d. The behavior is detrimental to the team.

I am against releasing player when

a. There is no one better than him at a key position

b. Player is performing at a high level.

c. Player has a bad game

I honestly have no idea how contracts work... Is there anyway where you can just rework someones contract instead of pushing their cap to a further season?

If the player is willing, sure. Most guys aren't willing to restructure their deal to take less money though. There are exceptions though - Thomas Davis did it. It usually takes extenuating circumstances though. With TD, he was trying to become the first player ever to return from 3 ACL reconstructions. You sometimes see it done by aging veterans playing for a contender too.

I don't see why a guy like Beason wouldn't restructure because of his injury problems when TD did the same thing last year.
