Bwood's Highly Anticipated Post Combine Mock (2/27/13)

Alright friends, haters, this is my second mock draft of the season. I did one all the way back when we were looking at a top 5 pick so it's completely irrelevant now. I'll do one last mock the week leading up to the draft.

Unfortunately I am only able to post on the huddle from my IPhone, so I can't include cool pictures or videos or bolded text to enhance the importance of my mock. My mock is completely based off of where I have players ranked, and my list of needs for our team. Since none of us know exactly what Gettleman will do, nor are we aware of who we will sign in free agency, just like my mock in December, this could change drastically.

Enjoy.

Round 1 pick 14, The Carolina Panthers select...

Desmond Trufant, CB - Washington: I have been a huge Desmond Trufant fan since he came onto the field as a true freshman. The level of complex and diverse offensive schemes that the PAC 12 is notorious for is just one reason why Trufant's four years of shutting down his man is most impressive. With an absolutely impressive combine and senior bowl to back up his tape, Des has now sky rocketed his stock, and could even go as high as the 10th pick much like Stephon Gilmore last year. If Gamble is cut, the Panthers could be looking to bring in a proven shutdown corner to replace him.

(Other option's: Star Lotulelei, Xavier Rhodes, Kenny Vacarro)

Round 2 pick 45, The Carolina Panthers select...

Jesse Williams, NT - Alabama: At the beginning of the drat process, I suspected Williams would lock up a top 15 draft selection. He was projected to break Stephen Paea's bench press record, and display his rare athleticism at this weeks combine, and though he might have drastically underachieved his expected amount of reps, Jesse still ran very well for his size and showed excellent upper body strength He's a pure run stuffer, and a very good one with a nonstop motor, but he's a Nose Tackle that didn't blow up the combine like Dontari Poe so he will slip to the second round. Jesse Williams is the ideal replacement for Ron Edwards, and with our first two picks in the draft we would have solidified our defensive unit for a long while.

(Other option's: Larry Warford, Justin Hunter, John Jenkins, Menelik Watson)

Round 4 pick 107, The Carolina Panthers select...

Brian Winters, OG - Kent State: Winters had to stop 9 reps into his bench press due to a pectoral strain, so he was unable to show off his strength and had to miss some other workouts as well. That doesn't change the fact that Winters is widely regarded as a top 5 guard prospect, though. Starting his career playing all 12 games at right tackle and earning MAC third team honors as a sophomore playing left tackle. His future in the NFL will either be at right tackle or inside at guard. Winters displays great distribution of weight and quickness of the snap, natural pass block abilities.

(Other option's: Kenny Stills, Tavarres King, Alvin Bailey)

Round 5 pick 141, The Carolina Panthers select....

Chris Harper, WR - Kansas State: The 6'1" 229 lb Chris Harper has often drawn comparisons to Anquan Bodin. Running a 4.55 forty and benching 20 reps proved that Harper truly is a big strong target just like Boldin, which makes him a very intriguing prospect in the mid rounds. I'd like us to address receiver earlier, or in free agency, but like I said it's really hard to determine what direction to go with a new GM.

Round 6 pick 169, The Carolina Panthers select....

Zeke Motta, FS - Notre Dame: This is the only duplicated pick from my previous mock draft. I feel Motta is extremely underrated and is only a slightly version than his former teammate Harrison Smith. Not saying Zeke could be a starter, but definitely good potential and a solid special teamer.

Round 6 pick 184, The Carolina Panthers select...

Dustin Hopkins, K - Florida State: *Obligatory kicker pick*

How would you feel about this?

You mean on the field right? I can't find his 40 anywhere. DNP I believe.

Yeah, not sure where the time comes in and all were disappointed in his lifts where he said he would do 45-50 but did around 30.

But, he would be fine with the 2nd rounder. Not like the top ten guy you thought he would be earlier.

Hoping for Lance Johnson or Warmack with the first one.

Oh no I chose a player that is completely worthy of the pick over other big names like Floyd/Rhodes/Vacarro!!! What an idiot!!!

See if you actually looked at prospects other than your favorite overrated prospects than you would understand this.

And if you read the part where I said this is based on where I have players ranked and what our needs are.

Floyd, Rhodes, and Vacarro might not be available, so I went with a realistic, outside the box pick.

They may be available.

If they are, would you still take Trufant over them? I hope not. CB is a huge need also but I would not go Trufant if Rhodes or Banks is on the board.

I'm not bashing you idiot. But this is just probably the worst mock Ive seen in a long time and it just had to come from you

But I love Jesse in the 2nd. Kudos and Pie to you

    • Nobody is giving up a 4th rounder for a backup QB And anyone who needs a starter badly enough to where Bryce would then be their starter, is such a bad team that they're not giving up a pick likely to be about pick 105ish overall, instead of just dealing with a bad QB situation for a season and then drafting one in a loaded QB draft next year. I'm looking through all the teams right now and can't think of a single one that would be willing to part with anything better than a 6th rounder. Barring injuries (and excluding the Panthers), there look to be 10 teams who don't know with 100% certainty who their starting QB will be in 2027... Dolphins, Jets, Browns, Steelers, Vikings, Colts, Saints, Falcons, Cardinals, and Rams. Of those 10...  The Rams know it will be Stafford or Simpson.  The Saints more than likely will be sticking with Shough unless he takes a huge step backwards.  So neither are giving up any draft picks for Bryce right now, just wouldn't make sense for either. Down to 8 Given their current QB situation of having multiple QBs they already need to evaluate between this year, the Browns (Shedeur/Watson), Vikings (Kyler/JJ), Colts (Jones/Richardson/Leonard), and Falcons (Penix/Tua), wouldn't be giving up a 4th (or maybe any pick) to bring in another QB to muddy the waters even more. Down to 4 Dolphins just signed Willis and wouldn't want to bring in another small Alabama QB who has struggled after just dumping Tua instead of just rolling with Ewers as the backup.   That then leaves the Steelers, Cardinals, and Jets left as it's clear none of them have any idea who their 2027 could be as of right now.  But the Steelers would for sure rather just see what one of the 2 QB's they drafted in the last 2 drafts could become than give up a mid round pick for Bryce.  Same goes for the Cardinals in taking Beck this past weekend. The Jets would be the most likely team to even consider taking him on, but I think it seems very apparent right now given them rolling with Geno and now talk of bringing in Wilson to be his backup, they're punting on QB this year to draft someone next year, so why give up even a mid round pick for Bryce?
    • Honestly I am not sure Pickett couldn’t step in for him. But I don’t see a clear easy upgrade and we are not KC with Alex Smith we are a team that hadn’t done poo for almost ten years and just made the playoffs. And looked good in the game. That stadium atmosphere on that day…. you know Tepper ate that poo up. Not one drink has been thrown in a while.  You had better make sure if you replaced him after that that you had a sure fire upgrade.
    • Makes sense. If Bryce is ass this year, we are probably drafting our new QB next draft and sitting him behind Bryce for a year
