Drafting a Guard in the first round

Am I the only one that thinks that is a waste. A good guard can be had in free agency at a decent price.

Yeah I know we are over the cap!

But the point being I would rather see the team take a OT,DT,DE,(WR in usual years) or cornerback in the first and pick up a guard in FA or later rounds.

Also speaking of WR we defiantly need to wait til the 2nd round before we pick one up. None of the WR's in this years draft are true 1st round draft picks.

Austin to small

Patterson to green

Allen to injured

Those are the only WR's that are talked about possibly being drafted in teh first. There is plenty of WR talent in the 2nd or 3rd round (if we trade down or get a 3rd round pick). But those 3 dont scream 1 year starters. Which is what a 1st round pick should be.

you don't need a probowler. you just need some guy that doesn't get pushed around much, who can open a hole or two, and doesn't get many holding calls or false starts. basically just some guy who isn't a liability. they aren't hard to find and they don't cost a lot.

you could make a case for OT, but that has more to do with OTs in FA being expensive. still they take longer to look good than other positions you could be picking up so you got to be ready for that.

I dunno honestly. Yea you can find a good guard in free agency. But from what I've seen from Warmack it seems like he can give you that something extra, turning a 15 yard gain into a touchdown from a block.

he wouldn't help enough to make up for not getting a good skills position in the draft and another OG in FA.

yea i mean you think about it. Theres been like what 2 guards in the last 40 or 50 years takin in the top 15. I know that number might not be right but it is close. That has to mean something, doesn't it. That said Warmack is a freak.

it wouldn't be that different from picking up a freak of a kicker in the first. sure...the guy might be a freak, but he'd still be a kicker. you just have to wonder about how important that position is compared to other ones and how easy they would be to replace without giving up so much.

Eh, I think that is a bit extreme. Comparing a kicker to a guard is a lot different. But i kind of get what you are saying.

I don't understand the under appreciation of Warmack. He plays with an unbelievable amount of speed and power. With his size, he will be a difference maker for someones offense. If we are really going to keep all these backs I could easily see him being the pick. He can make a running lane all by himself.

    • You guys are just going to have to accept the fact that Dan Morgan is a mid GM best case scenario currently. I used to have people get very belligerent over defending Scott Fitterer too. And that's not hyperbole. People used to go to bat for that guy like he was blood related. We have a truckload invested in the OL and what do we have to show for it? The whole unit is already banged up including one of our big signings. Even without all that the group has largely taken a step back from last year in pass protection. Then you get to the QB room and there's only two conclusions you can make about Dan Morgan. Either he deliberately ignored it two years in a row on his own accord or he took orders from Tepper to do so. Either scenario says he's not fit to be an NFL GM.
    • Frank, ceding control of the defense in no way verifies that Tepper told Canales to bench Young.    It certainly buttresses the idea that Canales would need permission to bench him but that is as far as you can take it.    After that it is pure speculation and it doesn’t make sense.
    • Uhh, okay yes that happened. I didn’t like the pick either I am a 3rd or later RB guy. Always. Actually hated the CMC pick too. Hated the Stewart pick.  No one wants to talk about trading the #39 in that draft and what he did with that.  Got #52, #155, and the Rams 2025 2nd to boot.   The 52 and 155 plus our 142 5th rounder to go up for a Brooks Everyone wants to forget about the 2025 2nd for that Rams trade  which was used to move up for Scourton.  That Rams trade down was a great deal for us.
