Extending Greg Hardy now would be a big mistake.

I mean hell, what do I know.. I'm just fug

hey that's a kind response from me, if I thought it was totally ridicules thing to say I would have responded with my normal verbal beat down that I normally do to the stupid people.

your thought does have ground to it, i just think the advantages of signing him now out weigh the risk

I understand completely, I wouldn't even be mad if we did extend him. You just have to remember a few of us are still scared after seeing Hurney throw around big money.

It's a gamble either way. Perhaps you jump the gun and overpay for a flash in the pan, or you wait and risk losing him to a higher bidder. Regardless, we must ask ourselves "what would Gettleman do?"

This is not your father's GM.

I do not get the logic of locking up Hardy now for a long term deal. Yes he had a breakout year last year but im very much against extending a player that has only had one good year. I keep hearing "well if we wait until next season, he will cost more because he will match or exceed last year's perfrmance." Sure, its a possiblity. But its also a possibility he under performs and we can sign him for a reasonable amount.

Not only that but even if he does outperform, im still not sure I would want to pay him big money. With Dwan, Short, Star and CJ, its not hard to have just a average player at DE come in and look like a force. If Frank Alexander has a solid performance I say it might be worth it to let Hardy walk and continue on with big Frank.

This is what I don't get about your argument.

Hardy has only 1 great season, he may or may not next year. Let him have a real chance to walk out the door.

Alexander has had 0 great seasons, he may or may not next year. Lets bank the future of the D on it.

see what I mean?

Its obvious what the plan of this D is PASS RUSH, have to have great ends for that. Plus Hardy can move inside easily. Him and Johnson are perfect for what they are trying to build. They both can play all over the line. Pressure from everywhere, Matt Ryan is going to be crying himself to sleep.

Last year was Hardy's best season as a player. While I think he's going to get better, it's not really smart to sign him to a big contract with just one year of production. I remember this time last year, tons of Huddlers were questioning Hardy.

Of course if he has a big year, his price will probably be too high for us.

To me Gettleman will probably have a chat with his agent and if the price is reasonable, we'll sign him long term now. If not, we'll let things play out and evaluate it when the time comes and to me this is the best course of action.

Like I said in the other post, Gettleman is not going to lock Hardy up anytime soon. As well as Hardy have played for us the last two seasons, let's remember that he wasn't drafted by Gettleman. Also, just go back to the Jerry Reese and Osi Umenyiora situation. Reese denied to give Osi a contract he wanted. Gettleman learned from Reese and we will see a lot of that philosophy around here in Charlotte. Gman will let this situation play itself out after the season, and he will use leverage (Avril/Bennett contracts) to garner the best contract for the team.

it all depends on what you want to pay the guy.

right now you could sign him to a deal similar to what dumervil got which would have been super low for a good DE any other year, but near the top in todays market.

3/24/2013: Signed a five-year, $26 million contract. The deal contains $8.5 million guaranteed -- a $7.5 million signing bonus and Dumervil's first-year salary. Another $9 million is available through escalators and incentives. 2013: $1 million, 2014: $1 million (+ $3.5 million option bonus), 2015-2016: $4 million, 2017: $5 million, 2018: Free Agent

last year cliff avril turned down a 3 year/$50mil deal cause he thought he could do better if he held out. he had to settle for a two year, $13mil deal. he wasnt counting on it being the buyers market that it is and next years looking like more of the same...or worse for players.

if hardy was handed a deal like dumervil got he'd be crazy to turn it down, even if its pale compared to johnson's.

I think the main problem people have with extending Hardy is that they think it is going to cost us CJ money. It's not going to cost nearly that much to keep him.

OSI is nothing more than a designated pass rusher (DPR), you can't compare him to Hardy. With Hardy's motor, which isn't going to change by the way, his game is more along the lines of Jared Allen, and he's going to get nothing but better.

With that said, he's not getting CJ type of money, and I doubt he's even expecting it.

The logic is, say Greg Hardy just has a flat out amazing year (12+ sacks, which he is capable of imho), the advantage of locking him up now would be that we might actually be able to get him cheaper than we could once he hits the open market.

However, there is always a chance that he regresses (which I personally don't think he will).

That is all. You have to decide if you think it is cheaper now or later. I also feel he is capable of repeating and improving last years success. He appears to be a hungry player to prove himself so I would pay him now personally. Either way has its risk and rewards

I'd rather wait, not because of what Hardy does or doesn't do next season, but because of Alexander. If Frank the Tank has at least 5 sacks this season as a rotational guy, which I think he's capable of, then that gives us not only leverage in extending Hardy, but also in restructuring CJ.

If Frank Alexander shows some potential, then I think we can sign Hardy and restructure Johnson both into the 6-8 mil / year range, which I think is reasonable for their skills and numbers. CJ is great and all, but 10 mil/year for a DE should be reserved for guys like Ware and Allen who are putting up 20 sack seasons.

exactly. gettleman isn't going to pay over market value and right now the best DEs are signing deals that average about $5mil a year....unless you're dumb enough to tag them.

Sorry, hate me if you must but I agree with CharlottePanther, Hardy is one of my favorite current Panthers but I need to see a second solid season, after that I don't care how much we pay him. I highly highly doubt he is a one year wonder but anything is possible.

I agree need another year.  PLus do we really need all that money tide in the Defensive line?  We do that and we wont have money for other postions.
