BlackBerry Z10

So, I have had the new BlackBerry Z 10 for a month or so and I figured I'd post what I think of it. It is a considerable improvement over past models. It's really light and the battery life doesn't seem to be an issue for me. I find the display to be gorgious. I also like that it has a micro hdmi output. Texting is simple. The keyboard offers non-invasive auto filling as you type and learns to suggest words you commonly use. The camera has an option called time shift that does about 5 seconds of burst photography allowing you to select the best shot. You can take it a step further and also adjust faces within the photo so if someone blinked, you can adjust that. The microphone doesn't pick up as well as I would like. The web browser is quick, although the address bar is at the bottom and that feels a little weird at first. It does support flash. The app offering is better, but it still lags behind Google and Apple. So far I'm happy with this phone.

Sounds like a good phone... I suspect however that Blackberry lost too much ground to make up against Apple and Android. We'll see.

If they put out good products word will get around.

I forgot to mention the gestures controls. It takes a little getting used to, but after a few days it feels very intuitive. I do agree that they rested on there laurels and the market changed around them. If you are in the market for a new phone I suggest that you pick it up and try it. I personally would like to see them make a little bit of a comeback because I like seeing a lot of competitors in a market. I think they have lost the game and are too far behind.  The only thing keeping them alive in their intergration into businesses and Microsoft products with their BES servers.  Android still isn't trusted in business as it's not very secure and Apple doesn't really care about companies, but there ARE companies using Apple now.  Also, companies are starting to go to the BOYD route (bring your own device) where people will use their own phones and probably get comp'd from the company on their checks.  I think the Windows phone could possibly more scary for BB than anything, but MS still makes good money off BES integration/support. 

 

One thing I have heard is that they could stay alive in software even if hardware fizzles out, by coming out with some emulator apps so you can have BES integration on iphone/android OSs.

Saw it at SX. It had some neat features but in the end it seemed to be a 2 year old Android phone. Even the folks working the booth realized that.

Worth a mention, the only reason we went to the Blackberry house was there was free booze with no crowd.

I'm not sure anything could ever make me leave the galaxy devices now, but the z10 did sound like a major step forward from what I've read on it.  I've had my Nexus for almost a year and a half now though, and it still works just as well as when i got it.  I won't be getting rid of it till the Note 3 comes out later this year....

Blackberry also has the advantage of being significantly cheaper for corporations that provide phones for their employees.  That alone will keep them around for a while.  Don't know if that will translate into success in the non corporate market though. 

 

My employer will provide employees that need a company phone with blackberries.  Employees can have an iphone if they can justify it, but they have to buy the phone, then allow the company to put security protocols on it that restrict some of the apps, and then the company will pay the monthly bills.  Droids are not allowed to connect to the corporate network.

Yeah this is true, and I was very surprised.  I worked at Wells Fargo and they were pretty much against Android because of all the different versions and how open the OS is (good for consumers, bad for security/companies).   They DO use iphones though.
