Kid has had a rough life. Allergic to everything, dad passed away a few years ago but against all odds reached his dream! He's also a Yankees fan. We live in CT so it's ok. Taken in the 6th round short stop.

After taking shortstop Tyler Wade in the fourth round, the Yankees went back to shortstop again in the sixth round with senior John Murphy out of Sacred Heart University. Murphy is a 5'11", 185 pound left-handed hitter from Seymour, Connecticut.

Baseball America does not have Murphy ranked in their top 500 prospects. Murphy played in the Cape Cod League last year for the Bourne Braves and was named MVP of the NEC Tournament with Sacred Heart, where he homered and drove in five runs. In 57 games for Sacred Heart this season, Murphy batted .374/.449/.576 with four homers and 29 stolen bases. His patience at the plate is going to need to improve for him, as he took only 26 walks in 203 at-bats this season. The hitting potential is certainly there, as he out-hit all his teammates by at least 20 this season.

Murphy led the Pioneers in all categories comfortably, and profiles as a bat that could fit in the top of the lineup going forward. Sacred Heart's baseball coach called him one of the most complete players the program has ever had. Murphy was instrumental in helping the Pioneers to multiple NEC titles and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

At 22 years old, he could likely start his season at either Staten Island or Charleston if he came to an agreement with the Yankees before too long. The good thing about college bats is that they don't have to toil around as long in the low levels of the minors while they develop. With Cito Culver already manning shortstop at Charleston, it will be interesting to see whether they have Murphy split time with him eventually, or if they keep Murphy in Staten Island until they figure out what to do with Culver if he doesn't start to hit.

Yeah are you gonna make a thread every time some guy you know in high school does something worth while?

I know a crap ton of guys from my childhood that went pro, we all played on the same little league team that made it to the championship in the little league world series vs. Curacao.

Should I start making threads?

    • I mean I think its a bit disingenuous to call basically anyone here a casual fan. I don't think the casual fan creates a profile then logs into it, in the offseason, to comments on mundane offseason topics.. I dont think anyone on here would be considered a casual fan. That said, I get your point. My POV is from the player. They sign this contract, move their family because of these contracts. When Clowney came him, we basically had a coming home party for him.  So yeah, I get why we did it and I know that ultimately the owner doesnt 'save' money, but I can feel for the human side of the player, which is why I want them to get all they can while they can.
    • My guess is the NBA will either send Flagg back “home” to the Northeast in Brooklyn or Washington, or San Antonio so that they can keep building around Wemby. If I was a betting man I would take the odds on the Spurs. This definitely feels like a #1 pick that they will rig.
    • In fairness, she is ensuring she is talked about.  People really aren’t going out there way to bring her up.  It’s some weird poo.  She would end up getting talked about given her actions if she was 40. Bill realizing some of these high end “companions” got a game of their own.  That’s what I don’t think Bill saw coming.
