Phil Jackson Told Shaw Not To Take Charlotte Job

Naturally Jackson wanted Brian Shaw to take over for him after he left the Lakers in 2011 but the team went with Mike Brown, and then, after a brief flirtation with Jackson, chose Mike D'Antoni. "I sat with [Lakers General Manager] Mitch Kupchak a week ago and even he couldn't find out for me," said Jackson of Shaw. "It had something to do with [Lakers owner/executive] Jimmy Buss, I think." Jackson is hopeful that his protégé ends up in the right situation as head coach. "I think that Brian might have an opportunity but I just want it to be the right one for him," said Jackson. "The last conversation I had, I told him to make sure he doesn't end up in a no-win situation like Charlotte." Los Angeles Times

 

For all that Jordan did for Jackson, he sure is a dick to MJ.

 

For all we know Phil could just be a coach that has reaped the benefits of having two of the greatest players (MJ and Kobe) to ever play the game on the teams he has coached.

As I said previously regarding Jackson... fug him. Most overrated coach in all of pro sports. Win with a team you built from the ground up, not one you were handed the keys to after they already compiled a team comprised of two or more hall of famers.

Even more of a reason not to like him. And congrats on telling Shaw not to take our job b/c he's now going on two years of being passed over for a head coaching gig. fug both of them. MJ should completely and publicly poo all over Phillip for this.

I think Dunlap was our last option to be honest with you.

 

I truly believe that besides Quinn Snyder and Dunlap, that everyone pulled out and we said that Dunlap was the best man for the job to save face.

 

If we would have landed Shaw, Sloan, McMillan etc... I think no matter what they would have been retained for this year.

 

Dunlap was hired to be fired.

Think about it from their perspective though...

 

No Charlotte coach has lasted more than a couple seasons, they've gotten a reputation for being cheap, they dismantled the ONLY playoff team in franchise history and they're still, at best, one of the four worst teams in the NBA. From Phil's perspective, I hate to say it but that does sound like a no-win situation if I have to give Brian Shaw advice.

 

But still. fug him for saying it.

Can you really blame him though given the circumstances with this franchise? The most notable thing the Bobcats have done in the last several years is change their name. It's not exactly the cushiest of jobs ya know.

I don't see any problem with him giving his honest advice. And frankly, he's right. Shaw is better off being an assistant on a good team than a HC on a terrible team- if he is patient he will be able to get a much better gig. You can't win if you don't have the players; we don't have the players and we don't have any history of being competently managed. Such is life for NBA bottomfeeders; Phil isn't going to go around lying to his friends about major career decisions because he "owes" Jordan anything.

 

Keep adding talent, avoid bad contracts, improve the franchises reputation, and even if Clifford doesn't work out maybe we will be in a better position to attract top coaching talent next time around.

So Jackson has the best players ever and did nothing but win more than any other coach...sure he is terrible.

Jordan had what three titles before jackson come aboard? Shaq fu n Kobe were always winning...sure he came into ideal situations but Coach Phil made it happen sorry but not everyone has to start in no win situations to be validated by poorly informed message-boardites.

Charlotte is a no win situation for the next two to three coaches. A guy like Shaw should wait when he is considered a top canidate.

I think this is probably true, though if any of those guys lost the locker room like Dunlap did they would have been fired too.  But there is also a reason the team had to settle for Dunlap last year- why would a proven NBA coach want to go coach a team whose front office was not interested in winning?  It just doesnt look good on a resume

      I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.

      I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
