Charles Godfrey took a big step," Rivera said. "We really saw his improvement as a football player during (OTAs and minicamp). I was really pleased with some of the things that I saw. I saw him doing things that a veteran safety needs to do, and he did them very well."

The resulting competitive environment has seemingly brought out the playmaking ability in those vying for opportunities to join Godfrey as a starter in the secondary.

"Ever since I've been here I don't think I've ever been a part of a secondary that broke on the ball and caused interceptions the way we did during (OTAs and minicamp)," Godfrey said. "That's a good sign.

"Everybody is clicking, everybody is moving with a sense of urgency, and I think that's what we need."

in b4 "cam has gotten sloppy and inaccurate with the ball"

He was already a solid player (regardless of what advanced statistics tell you). He has had to cover for the strong safety's ass since he's been in the league; which always tends to make him look bad when he cheats.

If the Panthers can get a capable free safety next to him then he Godfrey will be a top 10 free safety.

Godfrey was moved to free safety at the end of last season.  The position change apparently improved his play.  The competition at strong safety is between veteran FA Mike Mitchell, second year pro DJ Campbell, and undrafted FA Robert Lester.  I actually like Mitchell to win the job but split time with the other two.  Nakamura backs up Godfrey although maybe he gets cut.

You kind of lost me here.

Godfrey has been our strong safety, while guys like Martin and Naka played the free. Late last year Godfrey was moved to free while DJ Campbell played strong. I do agree though that Godfrey may flourish in this new role.

Not to be a pessimist, but we should also probably point out that Rivera was raving about Godfrey during camp in 2011, and he didn't really follow that up with a strong performance.

Yeah, I had it backwards lol.

He actually played well at SS but advanced statistics will only point that he allowed a ton of receptions because he was always cheating to help out his counterpart.

If he is able to improve his tackling, we should be really solid at FS.

I'm saying it right now.

Naka doesn't make the team unless injuries destroy the Safety position. Moore will be the back-up at FS and if Lester can play special teams. Colin and Naka could be gone. They are only keeping 9 players in the secondary. And the numbers don't work out well for Naka.

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
