Mike Mitchell: " I play football right on the edge." (Person)

Joe Person has gotten into the mindset of Mike Mitchell in one of his recent stories.

Mitchell twice has intercepted Newton, returning one for a touchdown during a practice this past weekend. In addition to picking off Newton again Monday, Mitchell delivered a helmet-jarring hit on Joe Adams that caught the attention of the crowd at Wofford.

 

In the process Mitchell has grabbed the early lead at strong safety, one of several position battles in the secondary.

 

Mitchell, a backup for four seasons in Oakland, came to Carolina as a free agent during the offseason for a chance to be a starter. He expects the job to be his.

 

“No doubt about it,” Mitchell said after a post-practice weightlifting session. “I wouldn’t have come here – that was the reason I left.”

 

 

Mitchell is all about business. The more I hear about him, the more I become convinced that G-man has an eye for picking up guys that not only want to play, but can play. This doesn't seem to be a case of the moment devouring the character, as was the case with Naka. Mitchell seems to have come prepared to seize the day.

 

To improve his coverage skills, Mitchell went to Phoenix during the offseason to train with Will Sullivan, an independent defensive backs coach who has worked with Tampa Bay cornerback Darrelle Revis.

I still wouldn't mind bringing in Mikell, but this just may be Mitchell's time.

Lets see how he does in the regular season first before crowning Gman the magician. Crossing my fingers hoping Mitchell is the guy.

All I remember is this dude was straight up eating Cam's lunch all day long when we played against the Raiders last season.  At least we know he's good at getting to the QB if nothing else.

i'm really excited about this guy. if he plays as advertised and if josh thomas turns out to be a decent starter as last year and this year's camp seem to indicate we may have a much better secondary than any of us have anticipated.

I honestly think we are ok at safety this season and next. I think someone will step up as a cb from our your guys and that captain will do well at nickel. In my opinion we are one good cb away from having an average secondary.

Naka seems like he was more of a feel good story coming in... this guy seems like he's fuging hungry and has something to prove.

 

It's weird, because even though he was giving Cam hell in our game against them I remember watching him and thinking he seemed like the type of guy you'd want on your team... lo and behold... he's now on our team.  I thought he was the Raider's standout player on the field that day.  He might not come in and be the savior of our secondary that we're looking for, but I get the feeling he's going to turn some heads this year.

I agree it does seem like he's really wanting take the SS spot and make it his. I can't wait to see what he does in the first preseason game next week.
