OK, it's a little early but I'm not so sure we need Hixon. And, how 'bout Gettis?

I feel like Joe Adams is going to make the team just from the punt returning position. Then, if he ever learns to hold onto the ball, he could really learn a lot from Smitty. Smaller guy, punt returner, has already been on the quick screen passes, etc.

I feel like our receivers go:

Smitty

LaFell

AE

Ginn

Hixon

Adams

Leaving Gettis and Pilares on the outside, looking in. Sure, Gettis had a very good game tonight, but he was playing against third string CBs. I'm hoping for the best from the guy, but right now I feel like he's on the outside. That could all change during the course of the next three preseason games, though.

You are absolutely correct about things changing in the next three games, but I might add that Gettis has basically already proven he can play against first string talent.  I think that the question is whether or not the injury has irrevocably slowed him down a step, or whether it's just purely rust that kept him from shining in camp. After all, catching and running good routes is what it all comes down to regardless if it's against the starters or the scrubs.

You just may get your wish, though Adams has a collegiate history of being more electric than Hixon.  Hard to say that Adams is JAG at this point. Hixon, not so much.

Gettis has basically had one injury in his pro career.  Hixon has had several.  Also, as has been alluded to, Gettis put up Hixon-esque career numbers in his rookie season, and the eye test (along with below average QB play that year) leads one to believe that Gettis has more upside.

Whoops beer clicked pie.  Hope you like it :)

I would feel pretty confident in declaring Adams as JAG at this point.  The same with Gettis.  Both of them badly need to create an explosive play or two before the regular season.

Pat Y continually mentions (even tonight) about Gettis having an uphill battle, which means his people in the Panthers org have told him that and that leads credence to him not being a Rivera guy.

For what it's worth, the coaching staff gave him a lot of opportunity tonight and he capitalized on it. I'm rooting for him.

Yeah, not wanting to be so speculative, but I've been telling people... If you read between the lines, Rivera has some kind of off-the-field issue with Gettis, and I think it stems from his personality. From what I've read, Gettis is considered, quirky, I guess you would say.

There was absolutely no reason Gettis shouldn't have played last year once healthy, but then there was the sideline argument and it was clear Rivera didn't want to use him. So, he's been going against the grain ever since. I think they want him to give them a reason to let him go so they can justify it, so I'm hoping he keeps proving them wrong.

I hate that political kind of crap with coaches and players, especially when a guy like Gettis has shown what he can do in the league, albeit a small sample size, but still...

People haven't even seen Hixon in a Panther uniform during a game and they are already righting him off?

My God, the Huddle is on that good stuff tonight.

Look, it's not like Hixon is indispensible.  In my estimation, he better get in and do something. He's not of the caliber to say he is a lock to make the team when you have guys in their making and supporting their case who just may have more upside than a JAG-type WR.  Another couple of games by our receiving corps like this, then these guys will not only be making and supporting their case, but justifying their case over a guy who has a highly questionable injury history.

I had to work every football Sunday last season, so could you reference this incident, Diddy?

I know Rivera didn't like Goodie, and he got canned. I hope that's not the case.

I guess you have forgotten that the last two years our number three's have been Naanee and Murphy. Hixon is easily better than those guys and while there are better WR3's in the NFL, Hixon is one of the better WR3's or WR4's we've had on the roster in recent history.

You said a couple more games by our guys? Which guys would those be? Adams and Pilares, both of whom did nothing in the wide receiver portion of the game.

AE and Gettis looked solid, but even with those guys we have one wide receiver position open and that is Hixon's.

i agree, how can hixon make a team from the sideline. lets remember last year as well, many thought Reggie Smith was lock to make this squad but did not.

Eh, I don't recall many people saying Smith would make the team after they actually saw him play.

Hixon has proven he is more than a capable third wide receiver and in a better wide receiving corp in New York.

Man, I wish I could cite you the specific game, but I can't off top. I'm on my phone too, so it's harder to search the forum for the game-specific thread. IIRC, I'm thinking it was the Titans or Broncos game, but I'm not sure. Several Huddlers IIRC, saw it on the telecast, and there were a few that were sitting close by and saw/heard it in game.

After it happened, he didn't see the field again for several games.

I also think this was around the same time he had been put back on the active roster and Phil Simms said during the game that Gettis looked explosive all week and would be a big part of our offense for years to come...

Maybe this is a wild idea, hear me out. Do you think we can let the guy we just signed to a contract actually get some playing time in a game before we completely write him off as totally useless? Naaaaaaaah, that's crazy talk.

Yeah, we can. If said guy can ever get on the field. Sitting on the bench or standing on the sidelines is totally useless, particularly for a guy who has the first time to put up any stat in a Panthers uniform.

As far as I'm concerned, Hixon's case for usefulness cannot be made from the sideline.  Get in the frickin' game!

It was Denver, I believe. It happened during 4th of a game where we were getting blown out, and that's the only blowout loss last year (aside from the Giants, but it was not that one).
