CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Quarterback Cam Newton no longer is the lone survivor of the Carolina Panthers' draft class of 2011.

Carolina signed free-agent defensive tackle Sione Fua on Wednesday to fill the roster spot that came open when injured right guard Garry Williams (left knee) was placed on injured reserve.

Fua, a third-round pick by the Panthers in 2011, was among the final roster cuts on Aug. 31. The past two years he played in 24 games with 12 starts.

He will add depth to an already solid defensive front that held the Seattle Seahawks to 70 yards rushing in a 12-7 loss on Sunday.

Carolina also signed offensive lineman Mike Jasper to the practice squad and re-signed defensive tackle Casey Walker to the practice squad. Walker also was among the team's final cuts.

This is the dumbest move I have seen since trading up to draft Armanti. We treat roster spots like they are endless.

Maybe it's someone that fills a ST role, and Fua is going to assume that specific role. Nothing else seems to make sense. The FO just can't be that oblivious.

 

For a minute I thought they cut him for week 1 just to avoid guaranteeing his salary, but I don't think he has enough years to qualify for guaranteed salary if on the team week 1.

 

I can't believe there is no one on the street better than Fua. Hell, we cut players far better than Fua.

Is this Dwan Edwards insurance? He's not practicing today. Fua is not really insurance. He's a liability when on the field.

Ron didn't think Star was all that great sunday. I mean sure, he dominated, but Ron's grading system says no, he wasn't really an improvement. Fua lit up Ron's grading system week after week, so he wanted to bolster that defensive front and bring back the tank.
