The more Rivera talks, the more I worry

I said that yesterday in a post - why your coaches have him on such a short leash is fuggin nuts.

from the sound of it, though, a lot of that is his doing.

heard from several that even though he had several opportunities to go deep, he chose the safer shorter route.

he's got this idea in his head...partly courtesy of george whitfield.

Whitfield said he had a discussion about running vs. passing with Newton, and he tells the same thing to all the quarterbacks he coaches, such as Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M or Everett Golson who starred at Notre Dame last year.

“I told him he had to demonstrate his way to fly the ship from the cockpit – leave the parachute on your back as a just in case,” Whitfield said. “Mike Vick, in his first few years, would play with his hand on the rip cord, and he couldn’t wait to rip it and take off and do his thing. I told Cam God gave him the biggest parachute ever for anyone who has played QB. But let’s play it the way Brady, Manning play the position. Survive and thrive for 10-15 years with no parachute.”

he wants to be a complete QB and that means becoming not only a good runner/scrambler QB and a good gunslinger, but a more proficient and efficient pocket passer. he needed to get better at his short/intermediate range coming into the season and that was what he focused his efforts on this last game.

i don't think it helped us win that game because there sure could have been a couple moments that he could have pulled something out downfield, but he didn't.

Bill Belichick actually approached Chip Kelly when he was developing his own no-huddle. Ron Rivera rejects the idea.

I'm starting to feel like we're spinning our wheels at this point, like we were with Fox in 2009 and 2010

So it seems like it might be the owner and not the coaches. JR want the team to play a certain way and thats that.

I acually like slow time consuming drives, the more the Panthers have the better chance we have at winning.

Whitfield is 100% correct, but Newton has to be careful and not turn himself into Donovan McNabb.

McNabb spent a good portion of his career trying to prove he was a passer first (Warren Sapp's "runningback who throws" comments got under his skin).  All well and good, except when you pass up legit opportunities where running is the right thing to do.

Heck, even Jake Delhomme scrambled sometimes.  It doesn't make you less of a passer if you make the right choices (and protect yourself).

Couldn't agree more.

Its counter-intuitive, but IMO if you have a great defense (which I think we do now), then that gives you MORE reason to be aggressive on offense if you have decent offensive players (and we do, including a double-threat franchise QB).

The attitude of "I have a great defense, so why should I take any chances or risks?" is the attitude of a loser.

My question is.......if we know it, has any coach in the locker room told him this? Who says the game has to be decided by one score?

I believe in putting away the game early .

10 minutes left in the fourth quarter I want to see the opposing team sitting in a daze wondering what they could have done differently.

The nfl is all about change. I m not sure why so many dout the chip kelly offense can work (obviously it can) and think its a fad. This isn't the wildcat, this could be the evolution of offense as we know it. Its beautiful to watch because of the control the qb has at the snap. Think of a true mastermind running it not named vick. And vick looked pretty good doing it. Even if you slowed down the pace any pass play can become a designed run, option pass or screen play. This thing isn't going anywhere folks. Look to more teams running it next season.

As for the getting grown men to run it arguement, it's amazing what grown men will do for a paycheck.

there wont be dissent in Phillys locker room over their playstyle at least. Everyone likes more plays. Offense likes more plays, defense likes more plays. special teamers like more plays. More plays=more chances to shine= more stats=bigger contracts
