Rivera's biggest weakness

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I do get that Cam is probably more critical of himself then a lot of the players on that offense. But, we weren't going to win that game unless the playcallers made adjustments and we all knew that wouldn't happen until next week when we are playing a different team and the adjustments become moot and irrelevant.

Rivera is always quick to blame his players in pressers for losses, but he continues to play these players...

I don't think we can blame Rivera for roster building considering the number of draft picks available. Who actually made those draft picks and the fact Gettleman is trying to cut wages for next year when our cap figure goes sky high. If you expect more talent on this team I don't know what to say. We can't afford it.

"Roster building" doesn't just refer to player acquisition here, though Rivera does have input on that.

The head coach sets the depth chart.  The GM rarely has any input on that.

On offense, Byron Bell and Brandon Lafell are the two guys you can really question as NFL starters. On defense we are playing pretty well but you can question our entire secondary as starters. I just can't sit here and rage over FUA being on this team. WTF does FUA do to influence a game? He's our 5th DT playing because of injury. Surely he doesn't carry the weight of the team on his back.

But again, the pick we used to draft Fua could have been someone more useful.

Well we'll see if Schaubs is permanent. He's been throwing one pick 6 in every game recently (Cam didnt do that bad). But, I wouldn't see a problem with benching my starter if we're being blown out or the team is running away with it. I'm not a coach though.

So who would you give more playing time? I'd probably give Melvin White another look. We don't have anyone better than Byron bell.

That's not necessarily a 'performance' benching.

If you bench him for poor play, it means you don't believe he can play back to form.

No, we don't, and that's part of the problem.

Rivera believed Bell was good enough that he didn't need replaced, and conveyed that to Gettleman.

Likewise, Rivera was okay with Captain Munnerlyn as a starting corner and Garry Williams as a starting guard.

In prior years, he was happy with Legedu Naanee, Seyi Ajorotutu and others.

And it's oft-discussed that he sees something in Sione Fua that none of the rest of us do.

Gettleman certainly isn't completely off the hook.  Even with Rivera's input, player acquisitions are ultimately his call.

But when it comes to the depth chart, that's all Rivera.

I see that distinction now. I guess I considered mine a bit of both because Cam had a late INT, I believe. But, all around Rivera still seems to forgive all too easily on underperformance by players. It makes everything seem so uncompetitive. I'd hate to be a talent on his bench for that reason. On the flip side I guess he likes to "believe" in his starters as some would say. I'm a see it to believe it. I mean it's great if they look good in practice and beat out the others but come game time is when things count.

    • Only hate is Phillips's contract. While then also saying, well, it's actually only 2 years 60 million. So the one area of hate...is actually not even bad. But, 17th. Sure.
