Cam's Checkdowns...

Recommended Posts

...I was impressed. Such a simple yet efficient play that Cam never seemed to utilize (always holding onto the ball too long, or going for the big yards). Smart decisions, scanned the field for 2-3 seconds and if nothing was there, dumped it off to DWill or Tolbert for positive yards. Hopefully he can keep it up. I do believe that is a big reason why we moved the ball so well against the Vikes.

This was the biggest difference between the Cardinals game and the Vikings Game. To negate pressure you must use screens and runningbacks for extra blockers! Forget the extra block send him out for a checkdown! This is the reason I feel much better about our offense, as we are using what the other teams are giving us. This team can be special, I just want to see them win a close game to close that loop!

Ever since early last season it was clear we need more slants, checkdowns, screens to up our game.  It was said for months that Cam wasn't capable of that, something I found a bit absurd given his football sense and athleticism.  Hell, I'm way on the wrong side of fifty and probably could still toss a few bullets six or seven yards through a swinging tire.  Surely Cam had the physical ability all along.  But, the emphasis wasn't placed on the short passing game, he didn't get the coaching/practice, and the plays weren't called, nor that option emphasized.  Yesterday it was.  Look at the result.

I've often cited the Mannings, including Eli before this years's meltdown, and Brady of course, as guys who exemplified the ability to consistently move the chains when the deep route didn't materialize.  Ten or twelve 8ish yard chunks down the field for a TD, often in two minute drives just slicing up the opposing D.  We finally saw Cam do that.  Also for the first time yesterday, I saw clear evidence of what Shula said: i.e., that Cam was allowed to audible.  Never saw/heard anything like that when it was obvious until yesterday.  Only... ready/hut.  Finally, multiple times we saw Cam approach the line, bark some orders and point out/direct position shifts, etc.  He actually reminded me of those aforementioned elites yesterday...something I was all but certain we'd never see in Cam's arsenal.  His QBR and efficiency numbers were through the roof.

I don't care what caused the light bulb to come on with RR, Shula, and Cam.  I'm just glad it did, and I hope and pray it stays lit for the rest of the year.

    • If we lose tomorrow we’d have to sweep the Bucs in order to get into the playoffs. With a loss tomorrow the Bucs would then hold the tie breaker if we finished tied If we can’t split with NO then we sure as hell not sweeping Tampa It’s win or go home tomorrow in my eyes  Biggest game since 2017 playoff game imo
    • Grok AI: No, there are no credible reports that the Carolina Hurricanes offered Jake Guentzel the same contract terms as Tampa Bay (7 years, $63 million total, $9 million AAV) before he signed with the Lightning. Reliable sources, including The Athletic, consistently reported that Carolina’s offer during negotiations was an eight-year deal worth $64 million ($8 million AAV). Guentzel did not accept it promptly, leading the Hurricanes to trade his negotiating rights to Tampa Bay on June 30, 2024, for a 2025 third-round pick. He then quickly signed the 7x$9M deal with the Lightning on July 1, 2024. Guentzel himself later reflected (in 2025 interviews) that staying in Carolina was his initial preference, but negotiations stalled and “didn’t work out,” with Tampa’s opportunity becoming a “no-brainer.” No reports from outlets like ESPN, NHL.com, or insiders (e.g., Elliotte Friedman, Pierre LeBrun, Frank Seravalli) indicate Carolina ever matched or offered the Lightning’s exact terms—total money, AAV, or length. The extra year was Carolina’s key advantage, but they reportedly stuck closer to $8M AAV and moved on when Guentzel explored options.
