Cam's Contract if the season ended today

He is 24 years old and in only his third season of taking over the historically bad offense of 2010 with mostly the same players.

What you are saying is, in order to know if Cam is a franchise QB we need to time travel to 2025 and see how many Super Bowls he has won before coming back to 2013 and committing to him.

Historical bad offense?  Guess you missed the 2008 season with Smitty, Dwill and Stewart.  Offensive line wasnt to shabby either when he came in.

If we go to the playoffs this year his contract goes up.  If not he really hasn't done anything to justify 20 million a year.  Sure he is worth paying big money but not the kind of money that Flacco got.  For that you need proven results and so far most of his is athleticism and potential.  Wouldn't be surprised if Cam did what Flacco did.  Not take the contract until he went to the playoffs to get the bigger bucks.

None of today's top veteran quarterback's became who they are in their first few seasons. Most of them occasionally still make mistakes and occasionally have bad games just like any other quarterback has. Last year Brees had a game with 5 interceptions and 0 touchdowns.

Short memory? I'm talking entire roster, not just offense.

Six guys, let's just ignore all the others that got released. Let's also ignore the fact that each player you listed did not get any younger with age. From 2008 to 2011, the team wasn't remotely the same. Williams, Stewart, Gross, and Smitty are also not the same players they were.

This is almost impossible to discuss right now.  I know you referenced that in the OP, but I don't think that we know yet what we will do.

 

Cam signed a 4 year contract with a 5th year team option.  That means he is under contract the rest of this year, all of next year, and if we want all of 2015.

 

I would assume that we will ride him through the second half of next season before we start to talk big money.  At that point we would be able to see if we are on the edge of the playoffs for a second year in a row (this season and next) and can pay him accordingly.  If we tank the second half of this season, and next season, I wouldn't be surprised to see yet another tear down of the roster, and us going young, even if that means Cam walks, or is traded.

 

Personally, I hope that we make a run at the playoffs this season, get some really good players to stack around Cam in the offseason, and become a dominate team next year.  Then we sign Cam to an extension, but one that doesn't crush our team long term.

 

That said, I am a firm believer that in today's NFL you do need a "franchise QB" to get to the playoffs consistently, you have to be careful how much you pay them if you want to continue the success.  Lately, most of the teams outside of Indy with Manning, and the Pats, with Brady that have made deep runs or gotten to the dance the starting QB's were on smaller deals (Brees' first deal with NO), or on their rookie deals (Sanchez, Rivers, Manning 2, Big Ben, Flacco, Ryan, Kaep, Wilson, etc...).

Let's see first Qb ever with 50 Ptd and 25 rtd in a three season span, one of the fastest qb's ever to 10k yards and 50 td's. One of the fastest players in nfl history to hit 75 total td's.

I think he's proven that he's an elite level qb and deserves the money.

Cam as of now is not a franchise QB. Simply has not been consistent enough nor led us to enough wins. 

 

Now, whether or not he will become a franchise QB, that is another topic all together and if I had to bet id wager him becoming a franchise QB. 

 

I would be hesitant to pay him elite / franchise QB money until he starting being more consistent and lead us to at least a win or two in the playoffs.

Works both ways. Saying he is a franchise QB when the record doesnt show it.  Doesnt make him one either. 

 

I can only remember a few games I thought Cam lost it for the team. Most of the Panthers' losses since 2011, can mostly be attributed to other areas of the game... Last minute drives for game winning TDs/FGs by the opposing team, special team mishaps, inopportune fumbles and drops, etc... 

 

Can a Brady or Manning win in improbably odds - yes they can. But the expectation shouldn't have been for Cam to overcome bad play from the team until at least his 4th season. That's pretty much the standard for all QBs.
