i have lucked out when it comes to natural disasters. i escaped the brunt of emong, and nestled comfortably in legaspi for two weeks next to mayon, an active volcano that holds the distinction of being the world's most perfectly-formed cone... and a month after i flew home it blew its top and half the province was evacuated. then last year i drove across upland ecuador, took a picture in front of snowcapped chimborazo, and saw on the news the next day that it'd erupted out of freaking nowhere and the country was mobilizing to evacuate the surrounding communities.

i'm starting to rethink this russia thing

you too huh....

a number of years ago I was in Cozumel and a couple days later, the ferry was hijacked, the crew or at least part of the crew was murdered

the last time I was in Paris....two days later the Concorde crashed

both times I was in New Orleans...the days before, during and forever since after, the entire city was covered in filth and the air was full of stink

ok...I won't take credit for that last one but the first two are true stories.

Don't wanna piss on anyone parade but 260kmh is not 230 mph. It's 160mph.

Different sources giving different speeds...this via CNN:

With sustained winds of 315 kph (195 mph) and gusts as strong as 380 kph (235 mph), Super Typhoon Haiyan was churning across the Western Pacific toward the central Philippines.

Yeah, that's the SUSTAINED winds... they are gusting as high as 230 near the core of the storm.

Everything I've seen says that those winds probably won't make landfall, but still...

160MPH is insane.

I've been thru three that had sustained winds at 115...  I can't imagine 160, much less 200+.

Nothing will survive.
