Very close. She's in a city called Iloilo. But I would imagine that being there within a few hundred miles of the damn eye the skies must be black for the next few days. I have not been able to get in touch with her through phone so I guess I'll trust that my 60 year old mother will check her Facebook

Finally heard from my mom who was able to flee the middle islands and go north to the capital. She said she barely made it before travel routes closed. She says it's still utter chaos even where she is. She is being told that there are over 2k deaths so far but I'm sure it will be more than that as the bodies are recovered.

Vietnam is next and I have a feeling there will be twice as many casualties there.

That's terrible.

I have been through 4 hurricanes, and stayed "on island" for them.  Sustained 80 mph winds are nuts, I can't imagine that what they are dealing with.

Utter chaos.

Indeed.  I was in Myrtle Beach during Hugo, and the highest winds here were in the 80's, except for some gusts that got a little higher, but even that was nuts....all the pine trees bending to the point you just knew they were going to break, but most somehow survived.
