Feeling F8cking Great

When I moved from San Diego to the East Coast I took almost 2 weeks to drive across the country seeing all the "off the beaten path" tourist traps.

Old Tucson movie studios, OK Corral, Tombstone, Carlsbad, Roswell, Albequerque, Cadillac Ranch (just south of Amarillo); Hot Springs, Arkansas, etc...

Had a blast and I was by myself. Me, my car, a bike on a rack and a few changes of clothes. The Navy was moving me and they wouldn't have my stuff to the east coast for almost 3 weeks, so I just took my time.

This sounds great

I did the same a few years ago, except I took the northern route - yellowstone, rushmore (western SD is amazing) a couple native american towns in Montana... Then there was nothing for like a whole day until St. Louis.

I would like to make the northern trip sometime. It's been 1987 since I was in Yellowstone and I lived in SoCal when I did that. After spending 5 days in Yellowstone, we drove across eastern Washington state, followed the Columbia River along 12 & 30 to the Oregon coast and drove the entire pacific coast over the next week... great trip.

Back to the northern route... it seems like the last few times I drove across country, which was 6 times over a 9 week period in 1989-1990, and my last time being when I moved from West Coast to East Coast in 1992, I was doing it between October and January. No way was I going the northern route then...

Yeah, I did it in January, while towing a car on a trailer that didn't have brakes. That didn't make for the perfect trip.

At sunrise in Montana, following I-90, going uphill was no problem. I crested a mountain, but the sun hadn't hit that side yet. As soon as I started downhill, I was on a sheet of ice. I just slid about a quarter of a mile until I was on asphalt again. Luckily it was a straight stretch of road. I'm pretty sure my heart stopped for a few seconds.

I love the Columbia River Gorge. Actually just about anywhere in Washington state will give you impressive scenery. I never had the chance to do the entire 101 along the coast, but I'll get to it eventually. I've done 101 around the Olympic Peninsula and some of Oregon. I was stopping about every 5 miles to take in all the sights.
