Game Grades - Panthers at Saints

In what could have been a glorious day for the Panthers organization, instead they are left desperately looking for anything that went right.

On with the grades...

Offense

From the gameplan to the execution, it all was severely lacking. Cam could not find open receivers. Brandon Lafell made key mistakes in receiving and blocking. Byron Bell was beaten badly on too many occasions to count.

Overall, a very poor performance. Lets hope they all got it out of their system.

Offensive Grade: D-

Defense

Allowing over 30 points is never good. Pressure was never really put on Brees until it was too late. It seemed the Panthers gameplan was to drop back in a zone and dare Brees to beat you with his arm. An odd strategy to say the least. The result? One of the worst defensive performances in recent memory.

Defensive Grade: D-

Special Teams

Not much impact in this game. The missed field goal was bad, but really were the Panthers going to win this game with field goals? Heck no. Riverboat.... Come back!

Special Teams Grade: D

Coaching

This game had no chance of being won before the Panthers even set foot on the field. Looking at what the Panthers tried to do and the inability to adjust and create some positive plays was too much for any player talent to overcome. The Panthers were badly out coached by the Saints.

That is really all you need to know.

Coaching Grade: F

No, the gameplan was to jam at the line. We were just very bad at executing that plan.

It was like watching the Cardinals game from earlier in the season all over again.

We shut down Brees early, had the opportunity to go up 14-0 in the first quarter, got field goals instead, then lost momentum. Honestly, with better play calling and execution alone, we could've won this game. Rivera has to get his act together, and kick Shula in the ass.

I didn't have any huge issue with coaching decisions or playcalling.

The strength of our D, the defensive line, just didn't show up tonight. We couldn't generate any pressure at all without bringing blitzes which left us exposed elsewhere.

On offense, our wide receivers had a bad day. Whether it was getting open, making catches or doing their job as blockers, the receiving corps played poorly.

I think the gameplan was fine overall. It just didn't work because certain individuals underperformed.

Too little, too late. Where was he during the first three quarters?

I'm sorry, but LaFell should not be re-signed. I can't trust that man again. Similar the Arizona game, he singlehandedly killed drives.

Watching at home on TV, I'm only able to see receivers that are in the frame at any given moment. So for all I know, LaFell was running free the whole game and Cam wasn't looking his way. Of course I'm not a fool so I know that's not the case, but if I witnessed LaFell open on a route and not thrown to, then I know it happens from time to time in games. People too often unfairly put too much on our receivers when Cam takes a coverage sack, wrongfully assuming he is scanning the entire field on every play and going through all his progressions. That's just not possible...Cam is getting BETTER with going through his progressions, but he's still locking onto receivers from time to time. I think there was one drive in the 2nd half where Cam threw three straight passes to Olsen without looking elsewhere, even though he had tight coverage on at least one of them.

On any given pass play, there are around 4-5 receiving options if you include the HB and TE. There are gonna be plenty of missed opportunities when some of these guys are running open but are not looked at. Happens for every team and every QB...I'm just saying this in response to people stating our receivers are "never" open because they aren't catching passes.

I have no clue on why that went back to the "old way"... playcalling made absolutely no sense... The Seahawks are built very similarly to us and they gave us the blue print on how to beat the Saints but yet we did nothing... We didnt attack we an intermediate passing game, we bottled up Cam, i mean wat the fug man! This play calling was the worst I seen all season long...

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
