Officially Concerned about the Offense

The offense scoring 14 points against the 27th ranked defense in the league who was also missing key defensive starters is an awfully bad omen.

Deangelo running for 3.3 yards per carry against the leagues 31st ranked rushing defense is pretty bad.

For a ground based methodical offense to lose the time of possession battle by nearly 10 minutes is scary.

If not for Cam's legs and ability to make clutch plays this offense would be absolutely horrendous.

Top issues with the offense in no particular order:

- Lafell's inconsistency

- Byron Bell (self explanatory)

- Lack of sharp, quick passing plays and hot routes.

I know that you are not a Shula fan, but am interested in your perspective....

Do you think the bigger issue is playcalling or execution?

Insert Mike Shula. Take a top 5 offense to bottom 5. We all knew it was going to happen at the beginning of the year.

People can argue execution all they want but the OC needs to be calling plays that puts the players in the best position to gain yards. He hasn't done that consistently.

Let's hope 2 weeks of rest, film review, retrospective thinking/game planning, and of course being at home set's this team straight!?

Rivera/The Panthers, would have lost that game if the Falcons Center didn't fumble that snap. You gotta find a way to offensively close these games out (Smitty or no Smitty) Ron Ron. You got very ((really extremely) lucky. Don't go back to your old ways, and please cook up some good Playoff Gumbo (no Saints pun intended) for your playoff game 2 weeks from now.

We'll see?

We were scoring 30+ points a game mid season this year.  So, either you think that the playcalling has miraculously changed since then...unlikely.

Or, that the players are just not executing right now.....more likely.

I agree it is concerning. Maybe it is not all bad though. Because of our record and success every team we faced in latter part of the season had game planned specifically for us in a manner that only happens with teams like the Pats, Saints or Broncos. We got everybody's very best and still won. I think a lot should be said for that.

I think it is pretty equal. Neither have been awful, neither have been good.

If I told you an NFL team was not calling plays particularly well and also not executing well either.... where might you assume they would be ranked? 25+?

You'd be right. The Panthers 26th ranked offense can't be attributed to only execution or coaching. Its both.

I think it's play calling 70% execution 30%.  When we were dominating TOP we were basically running a dink and dunk offense.  Now we look like the return of chud, ,more read-options than usual, and tons of down the field routes which haven't been hitting.

It is both...   the running I think is because the O line is getting beat.  They have no push and therefore the RBs have nowhere to go...

The biggest play calling issue imo is the lack of quick outs, screens, etc., to get the ball out of Cam's hands quickly.

Teams are forcing us to beat them with the passing game and it just isn't there.

Quick passes, work on the run and let Cam play is the only way we'll have offensive success in the playoffs.

Maybe, Shula will switch it up again, come the playoffs (or at least show a mixture)??

I don't understand though, why they don't throw more short throws and slant routes, to take pressure off the OL?

This is absolutely obvious to us, so I am positive it is obvious to professional coaches.

So the question is, why is it not being addressed? Are they worried for Cam throwing quick picks? Are they less worried about Cam throwing the deep ball because, well, its almost like a punt anyways if intercepted.

I agree... everyone is talking about it... there's no way they have just missed this, so there's obviously some reason behind it...

We have executed some screen plays well in the last couple of games, but only a few...  idk why we don't do it more?

Maybe they're saving them up for the playoff run?

    • So, objectively, you'd say from a holistic review of Rico's performance and the team overall there were at least a dozen players on the team that performed at least as well if not better in their roles?
    • I'm not a huge fan of BY, but he does have some clutchness developing
    • While you're correct, people are just sick of being told, "you don't understand this, you're dumb" despite what their eyes say. This applies to the Panthers and anything else in life. This board can be a miserable place, but this isn't the old days anymore because Social Media & Reddit have hijacked old-school forum users.  I have in the last year or so taken a massive step back from Social Media & Reddit. Deleted accounts on both, I only have X/Twitter now. But I was looking for an outlet for Panthers talk and I did not want to do that on X much at all. There are only two legitimate outlets for that I've found, here and SB Nation. SB Nation I used to partake in, but they absolutely bumble-f*cked the comments section, and I like the setup of the posts + comments, as opposed to article + comments. Also, as others have pointed out, being a Panthers fan has been a horrendous existence since Cam left. Just an awful crew of coaches, draft picks, trading away great players, etc. It's been miserable.  Ever since Tepper bought the team, I hoped that he commit to a full rebuild. He never did, he thought there were shortcuts and so did Rhule. This hamstrung us for years, and then he massively overstepped with the BY trade.  This ruined the team building, because there was no depth, and then it ruined nuanced BY discussions because of the insane haul we gave up. He will never live up to that, I think many people are finally wrapping their heads around that now which is good. The best thing for this board to get better is for the Panthers to win more, draft well, and to stay committed to crawling through this Andy Dufrense poop-pipe to escape the depths of NFL hell. It will be ugly and stink along the way, but you can see already this year if we commit to drafting then the team and the vibes can turn around quicker than you think.  I am extremely optimistic about the draft class this season, it's something to watch, talk about, and celebrate. It also gives Dan and I think by extension Dave Canales more of a leash, which I think we need to give them and grant them the time to turn this boat around.
