I wonder how Cutler's contract will affect Cam's

top dawg

This is something I was thinking about today. If Cam makes a run to the Super Bowl or god forbid he wins it. His value will go stupid high even though his stats are average. Winning now could doom our franchise in the future, but I'm not too proud to take a Super Bowl ring and suck for 7 years.

Hopefully Cam is willing to work with us. I think 15 a year would be very fair. And let's get something out of the way, Jay Cutler has accomplished far more than Cam has.

That certainly couldn't be because one quarterback is 30, and the other is only 24, no?

Not sure what you're getting at with the rest of your post. So because his value will be high, we should let him walk?

The market value for franchise quarterbacks was going skyward well before Jay Cutler signed his recent contract.

The last few years seem to show that teams are increasingly willing to move on from quarterbacks (see Gabbert, Blaine; Weeden, Brandon; Ponder, Christian; etc.) that suck - partially due to the new rookie contracts - and more willing to handsomely reward the ones that aren't elite but well, at least they don't suck (Flacco, Cutler, Ryan, Romo, etc.). We can argue the merits of individual contracts and perceived value of individual players, but at the end of the day, Cam Newton is getting a big fat contract cause he doesn't suck. You don't have to be Manning, Brady, or Brees to get a monster contract. You just have to not be Blaine Gabbert.

Romo will ALWAYS suck, even if he wins everything. He's a cowgirl.

mark my words... Cam Newton- highest paid NFL Player in history when his contract is up, he won't settle nor should he for less. If you guys think he is going to get money on par with Cutler, your wrong he has WAY more upside then a 30 y/o QB who looks like he has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Cam is an icon, great QB and entertainer, he will be paid as such either by us or any team in need of a franchise QB

No chance we don't extend him but shouldn't we (and he) hope it doesn't cripple the team?

Kinda wish people would let the "icon" and "entertainer" stuff die. Cam did before he signed with us. Now he is doing what he can to be a great football player.

I would give any amount of money for a Lombardi in the case at BOA.

Well, JR's money.

    • Option A:  Pay your starting QB starting QB money. Option B:  Look for a starting QB for 4-10 years (or longer) while wasting the talent at every other position.    How many of the top 20 QB's do you think are worth what they are being paid?   When you factor in the last year of his present deal his contract is really an average of 45 million per year which in today's QB market is a very, very good deal. I wish we'd had found a Brock Purdy to pay 50+ million a year right after we parted ways with Cam.  Ya'll go ahead and live in fairy tale land where good to great (much less elite) QB's are available to pay. Just the fact that they had the chance to pay Brock after the disaster of trading up for Lance is a testament that when you find a quarter back you can win with, complete in the playoffs and superbowls with, you pay him.
    • They will still be a playoff team but they aren't contenders anymore IMO. They won't be able to spend like they have when they went to a SB and proved he couldn't carry a win at that level with a really good team around him. Now he is going to have to do it with less to spend around him. They just locked in to being a playoff bound team that's going to be a known speed bump for whoever will represent the NFC in the SB.
    • Hmm. I think he'll live up to it. Last year, about half of his team was on IR it seems, at one time or another. Year before, Super Bowl appearance. Year before that, playoff run after being third on the depth chart and being pressed into service. Is he one of the greatest in the game right now? Nope. No chance of that. Is he in the top 10 going into next season? Pretty good chance of that.  Would 20 or more teams in this league love to have the guy as their starting QB. Most likely so. He's a good QB who can implement his coach's game plan to a T and has both the confidence of and confidence in his teammates. That'll take you a long way in this league if you've got the right cast around you, and he does.
