Carolina - San Fran Comparisons

There is a lot of talk about how equal these teams are. Lets break it down by units..

QB

Kaepernick is a one read wonder. Cam is a league MVP candidate.

Winner: Carolina

OL

I don't think there is any honest person that would pick Carolina here.

Winner - San Fran

WR

While Smith/Boldin matchup is pretty close, San Fran has much better depth. Who would take Lafell over Crabtree? No one.

Winner - San Fran

TE

Greg Olsen has more receptions than Vernon Davis. Davis had more yards. Olsen, however, is more durable.

Winner - Carolina

RB

Yes, Frank Gore is legit, but I will take the triple threat of Tolbert, Williams, Stewart. All capable of being NFL starters.

Winner - Carolina

DL

Hardy, Star, Dwan, Johnson are the best front four in the league. No comparison.

Winner - Carolina

LB

Patrick WIllis is their best, and Luke bests him. Thomas Davis adds to the dominance.

Winner - Carolina

CB

I'd take Rogers and Brown over our guys. But I do like Melvin White's future.

Winner - San Fran

S

Mitchell and Mikell are a more formidable duo than Reid and Whitner

Winner - Carolina

K

Gano has missed 3. Dawson has missed 4.

Winner - Carolina

Coaching

I am assuming RIverboat Ron will show up on Sunday. If so, I think it is a push. If not, Harbaugh wins.

Winner - Push

I love the optimism.

But, I think a lot of these are closer to pushes.

Namely, TE, RB, and LBs.

TE is a push, but RBs are definitely in our favor. Frank Gore has a similar YPC stat but contributes nothing in the passing game, and neither of their backups are as good as Stewart and Tolbert. Linebackers is no push, it favors us because Luke is better than Willis and Bowman and Thomas Davis is better than Ahmad Brooks.

Olsen is good but he isn't the playmaker, nor the blocker that VD is. TE goes to SF.

RB is a push, although I think yall use your RB's better than we do.

LB -  Keuchly is great and Davis is as well but they are not a better tandem than WIllis/Bowman/Smith/Brooks.

Pretty fair comparo.

I think our D is better than theirs, but they're not bad by any stretch.

We have to contain Kaepernick and get in his face because they do have offensive weapons.

Offensively we MUST set Cam free and use Tolbert.

clay matthews being out killed GB. Kaep was able to run free because they couldnt set the edge or contain.

We have the two fastest linebackers in the league with unreal tackling ability. I will be shocked if Kaep can run on us.

Zod, you know as well as I do, this game will come down to the coaches. Teams are pretty evenly matched, just depends on what coach or coaches call the better plays.

I disagree. In the playoffs moreso than the regular season it is the players that must step up and take control.

Look how many incredible and huge plays, some unscripted, took place over the weekend that won or lost the game.

Rushing is key for this game on both sides... it will be far too much incoming pressure for these qbs to flatout put the game out of reach with their arms. Therefore the qbs with the best legs will pull this out. I think Kap will use his more than Cam but only because it will be for running away rather than running for yards. If our run game gets going the first half we can put them away early. Bell needs get his crap together and the threats of Smitty and Stew on the field only will boost our power. No way the 9ers come in here like they barely did with that no up front pressure D they faced yesterday! WE ARE NOT Green Bay.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
