DG: We are still cap challenged....RR: Coaches staying

Remember RR helped coach Hardy up.  He knows Def as we can tell and his assistant coaches know their job too.  We took players people didn't want and made them decent secondary help, temporary help but help no the less.  We have a whole offseason, training camps, and hopefully some of these young guys will take upon themselves to grow as players.  I feel they will because they want it and they know RR does not give any position you have to earn it.   I love Hardy but if he wants a big big number then we just can't afford him with our other glaring holes.  Our Def will take a step back for sure, hardy is a beast but we'll go from the top 1-2 Def in the NFL to a top 6 or 7 Def.  If we can get this Off to step up a little our def won't have to be a top 10 def but we will and man then we will be scary.  Right now Panther Nation should be letting GMan do his thing and get this team to back to back winning seasons and breaking the cycle of not having back to back NFCS Champs.  KEEP POUNDING!

Don't forget the eight million we're paying to Beason next year to play for someone else as well, that we cannot do anything

This is wrong.

We aren't paying Beason anything.

That money is accounting for his guaranteed money

I was right about Rivera, I was right about LaFell. I'm gonna be right about J-Stew, and I am probably right about Shula, though I really hope that I 'm not.  We are just wasting time, speculating what Shula would have done with another team's personnel. We can do that with anyone. The more genuine comparison is what he has done with the Panthers' 2013 personnel which was arguably an improved version of the 2012 personnel that his predecessor obviously used more effectively.

And don't give me that crap about our style of offense working in concert to improve our defense. Our defense improved because of coaching, experience, and key additions at positions that were sorely wanting in 2012. All that being said, Shula did less with more (which, in some ways, was a reflection of his body as work as a past OC).

People were always waiting for Brandon Lafell to break out, even though he had already reached his ceiling. I guess we'll have to wait another couple of years, after Shula under-performs, to conclude that we can get someone that can do better with the shiny, new toys before they get rusty and broken.

Our defense improved bc of DT talent and what that allowed our DEs and LBs to do......as well as being healthy.

Out D ranking, was aided by Shula. The Carolina defense defended less offensive drives by opponents than any other D in the NFL.

Nah. Not really. When thinking of what Chud would have done with Ginn alone, I don't believe it. Not to mention that Barner, B-Will, and MCNutt couldn't hardly get a sniff of the field.

I'll just agree to disagree.

Turned the ball over a lot more and had more 3 and outs.....that is what that sounds like. I'd much rather win than make the ESPN Top 10 for one highlight play mixed in with a lot of slop. You remember the one Chud-like called game? They pretty went downfield to Ginn all game. That was a loss in Buffalo.

Gettelmen addressed today about Barner. That wasn't Shula... even with a hurt Stewart there are too many guys ahead if Barner. Other guys are green and raw. There were reasons they weren't on the field.

How many respected offensive players spoke out about Chud's offense? 89 had better numbers under Chud.....he prefers Shula. He wants to win....not have meaningless yards.

Yep those rb contracts have really handcuffed us. I could see having one big contract there. But 2? Nothing personal, stew and deangelo are great guys but we now have glaring holes elsewhere that we can't easily fix. Sent from my SPH-D710 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

you guys seem to forget we are still paying Beason 8 million in 2014

An alternative that makes sense to me would be to tender Hardy. Even if we use the non-exclusive franchise tag, if we want someone to match it they would have to pay up a pair of first rounders, and I don't see that happening. A tender, however, would basically allow us to dangle Hardy for a draft pick without committing an exorbitant amount of money. Here are the tender amounts and compensation for 2013 (unsure of 2014 just yet, but it'll likely be similar).

$2.9 million - 1st round compensation

$2 million - 2nd round

$1.3 million - Original draft round (Hardy would be a 6th)

Here's an example relevant to the Panthers:

  • Team declining to match offer sheet. Carolina Panthers cornerback Ricky Manning, Jr. was a restricted free agent in the 2006 offseason. Based on the tender placed on Manning by the Panthers, the team would receive a third-round pick in the NFL Draft if Manning signed with another team. On April 21, the Chicago Bears signed Manning to an offer sheet - a five-year contract worth up to $23 million. Although the Panthers had a full week to decide if they wanted to match the offer sheet, they announced on April 24 that they would not match. At this time, Manning became a member of the Bears and the Panthers received a third-round draft choice in the 2006 draft from Chicago.

Manning was drafted in the third, so we received a third for not matching the Bears' offer. Similarly, if we really want to put Hardy out there I think the 1st round tender makes most sense. If someone bites, we get a first round pick OR we can match any offers he may get. If no one bites, we get Hardy for about $3 million. Obviously, he wouldn't like this, but it would give us leverage in the negotiation process since he'd have to choose between playing a year under the $3 million tender or getting a reasonable deal done.

We need you in the panthers organisation - I think youre the only huddler who knows how this stuff works and can actually explain it so the rest of us can understand it.

Clearly we aren't going agree about anything it would appear.  What you think is gospel,I think is crap and vice versa.  You dislike Shula and you have that right.  I just point that Gettleman likes him and thinks he did a good job. So should we believe our GM who gets big bucks to make these decisions and has been talked about as the GM of the year or a guy on the huddle who likes to argue.

HMMMMM................

Tough choice.......................

The problem is that you can't tender Hardy as he is an unrestricted free agent.  Tenders are only used with restricted free agents. Maybe we need to keep who we have.  So much for huddler wisdom.

Let go after one season after he fleeced the Colts for a first round pick by perennial playoff team Cleveland.

Chud wasn't the GM.....the GM made that deal with Indy. He also quickly admitted Chud was an epic fail

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
