8. Carolina Panthers (27th)

Pass Blocking: 10th, Run Blocking: 9th, PEN: 6th

 

Stud: It’s been a year to remember for Jordan Gross (+33.5). Retirement had been talked about, but surely he won’t quit when playing this well?

Dud: When you convert a defensive linemen to starting right guard there are going to be teething problems. That said, they can be relieved that Nate Chandler (-9.0) wasn’t the total liability he could have been.

Analysis: A big part of their offensive turnaround. They lost Amini Silatolu to injury but Travelle Wharton came in and played lights out in his 851 snaps. Throw in the good (although media overrated) play of Ryan Kalil and it’s really just the right side of the line you look at and think they could do with upgrading the talent/ experience level there.

Not saying it's gospel but certainly makes me wonder why everyone wants our first 5 picks to be O Line.

 

A successor for Gross needs to be groomed, but other than that, I don't see a huge urgency. Cam had all day to throw until the 49ers knew we were going to pass on every down.

 

Also, for all those saying that Deangelo was terrible because of the line. No. DeAngelo is washed up.

 

We need dynamic skill players, a tackle, and DB's, in that order.

PFF is so subjective.  They use their own analysis based on what they see but have no inside information about what was called or should have been called, simply what they see, but my eyeball test says 8th is about 15 spots too high.  Does anyone think our offensive line was top 10?  

 

I am a homer as much as anyone but..............

Top 10? Arguable. Top 15? Absolutely.

 

Meanwhile it's not arguable that Seattle's O Line wasn't all that good. Yet they still had a good ground game.

 

I wonder how....

 

I think the biggest issue is two of the best linemen are old and will need to be replaced soon.

We will have Gross coming back. We've invested an early second and early 4th into our Guards. Wharton will be back. Unless Kalil is struck by a comet, we're set a C. We need competition at RT. Conversely, we have nothing at WR other than a mid-thirties Steve Smith. And while we all enjoy watching a 24 year old have to piggy-back the entire offense, it's probably time to invest a little and get someone else that another team would actually respect/fear.

 

The extra 1/1.5 seconds of protection you'd be getting by upgrading at G isn't going to do anything when LaFell is taking 14 minutes to finish out his curl or highpointing to pop up balls meant for other players.

      Damn Logan Jones had a good day too. Was high on him coming in as he anchored that top Iowa line and is a fire plug inside. He's gonna be 25 to start the season so maybe he slips into the 4th but I doubt it, even if C isn't a premium position. His play on the field was top notch and the combine boosted it again. Arm length is about the only knock. But guy is plug and play at C.   This is a loaded class at C. Need to grab one.

      Bryce will be permanently replaced by a draft pick. There's not another Sam Darnold out there to save us. Tepper is going to see this throw because he dumped Mayfield and Darnold too soon. He's going to give it 1 more year before he will sign off on dumping another 1st round pick qb. Thats the cold hard truth of it. It doesn't mean we can't get younger and much better at the backup position.

      Maybe I should have used a different word and saved that for me. I want someone that has something impressive about them.  Someone that has potential to supplant a guy who is producing 25th best type of numbers. 22nd, 27th all that bottom third neighborhood.  I don’t know where that will come from it just can’t be from even a 4th round pick this year IMO. Unless FA is crazy productive.    I’ll give Bryce a better than bottom rating for his playoff game. Well above low twenties. But at least half of his games were bottom third level. Probably 2/3 to 3/4 of them were.
