Oklahoma State's Marcus Smart Pushes Fan In Stands

I put this here because I know some guys have discussed him as a prospect, well, I have a feeling he is freefalling his way out of the draft.

So he committed a foul that carried him into the stands under the basket. He fell down and when he got up, he apparently took offense with something a fan said to him, so he stood up and viciously shoved the guy and was immediately pulled away by teammates.

I would still draft him in a heartbeat and I hope we do.

When I've watched him, I've never been impressed. I've heard people compare him to Wade, and I dont see it. He doesn't look nearly as explosive to me and he can't shoot. Ive already said, only guy I'm certain that I want to draft is Hairston. We need offense, not more defensive guys who can't shoot.

From what I've seen this season, his shot has improved a good amount (the reason he went back to school) and he is a very hard worker with great upside.  To me, he's the 3rd or 4th best player in the draft.

Interesting take from a scout:

A former NBA general manager who is currently a scout said Saturday that this shouldn't affect Smart's draft status, should he declare, since he will have time to talk about it during the interview process in the spring. The former GM said Smart's character hadn't been called into question in the past.

I call bullish*t. He has been a train wreck for awhile now, and I have no idea how making physical contact with a fan who didn't contact you first is no big deal?

I'm betting that fan dropped the N bomb. Regardless, he should know not to respond in that way.

First thing I said to my wife as well. Only thing I could think of that would illicit that response from a player. But, I heard Stephen Jackson joke with Dan LeBatard one time about how when he went into the stands and started throwing haymakers at The Palace he was taking out all his frustrations from hearing the "n-word" all those years, lol... and I don't blame him. I didn't think Artest or Jack were wrong in that instance on principle, because it started when a fan threw a drink on Artest (making physical contact).

So, if that were the case, I understand Smart's frustration, but they hadn't touched him, so he should've ignored it and walked off... after all, he is a guy on the verge of making a living playing basketball and that fan is a fat loser watching him and insult him instead of doing it himself. You got to let it go.

Several sources on twitter, among them Julius Hodge and Bomani Jones, are saying Smart told his coaches immediately after the tech was called that the guy did call him the n-word.

The fan should be banned from games regardless of the outcome with Smart's situation.

I'm assuming as well that the fan called Smart the n-word to get that reaction. IMO, this is going to be a giant overreaction and suspension for Smart. Did he overreact? "Yes". But at the same time, the fan has the right to have his ass kicked because he wouldn't say a damn thing to Smart if they were alone.

Smart's flopping and now this incident are painting him in a bad light. He obviously has maturing to do...but I honestly have no remorse for a fan getting pushed, if he did invoke Smart or any player for that matter in absolute idiotic ways. If he did attack Smart, especially in a bigoted way...fug him.

    • I'm happy with TMac, but Tyler Warren was last season's Tyler Linderbaum for me in that he was at a position that wasn't one of the five pillars but he was the best player at his position AND one of the top talents in the draft. I cannot fuging wait for the Panthers to start winning again so that those guys fall to us like they seem to for teams like Baltimore & Philadelphia.
    • Still working on consuming all of these so I don't have summaries available, but I figured there might be another Huddler or three trying to kill time before tonight's final preseason game.   Panthers Blueprint: Training Camp The in-house produced Blueprint series has given behind-the-scenes look on the field and off. Start the day with Robert Hunt's family, be in the morning meetings, mic'd up players during practice (Jaycee, Rozeboom, Icky, and Bryce), roster evaluations by the staff, and plenty of camp highlights capping off with FanFest.   Processing Blue (Mike Kaye & Alex Zietlow Mike and Alex are back talking about a variety of topics including but not limited to: joint practice + preseason game vs. Houston, Trey Hendrickson trade rumors involving Carolina, training camp awards, draft pick draft, and various thoughts about the team.   Jordan & Jake 706: Opening Day Another in-house Panthers' production, the most recent episode of Jordan and Jake talk about how to properly balance intensity in practice, react to the starters being shutdown for the preseason finale, share their thoughts on the newest Panther QB, and more.   Raw Room - Ep 278 - Gas Pedal (ft. Mike Davis) Assistant special teams' coach Darren Bates' Raw Room podcast has former Panthers' RB Mike Davis on his weekly podcast. I'm about halfway through this one and it's been a lot of fun. The Raw Room guys (DB, his friend Alex Sweets, former Eagles/Chargers OT King Dunlap, and former Atlanta DB Jalen Collins) are hilarious and Mike fits right in. They talk about his football experience coming up, decommitting from Florida and how he decided on South Carolina, and more. Warning: If you're the type of person that is easily distracted by accents, despite XL being on the team, you might have issues with understanding the Memphis dialect. If you don't care about how somebody talks, just what they're talking about, tune in!
    • Allen was borderline unplayable in College.  He's an absolute unicorn in terms of his career panning out the way it has.
