Important decisions loom

Thought I'd share this article, never came across this guy before but he seems to say it as it is and doesn't throw in to much opinion and false generalized numbers, it just breaks down how tough these next few weeks will be for us as fans and as a franchise, whilst I would love to keep important guys like smitty, hardy, gross on the roster I want us to compete evey year and not just once in a blue moon, I honestly think

It maybe the right thing to make these moves and even accept a season of transition to progress longterm, it just beggers belief how much one mans incompetence can set you back like Hurney has done too us.

The problem with the article is that the scenario doesn't improve the team, or replace with equal production at lesser cost.

I agree but that's the whole issue with us this offseason it may well be that we have two take a step backwards to then take huge strides forwards, facts are facts and unless there is money available that we do not know of we are going to have to shed a few vets and possibly hardy. Two years time can't come quicker for me when we have the two RBs off the books and possibly CJ or atleast get the books in order so that our cap number is better managed, but let's face it we all know the situation now isn't pretty add to that cam, luke, star, kk and whoever we draft this year, guys on our roster for the future 'the core guys' as gettleman mentions will need tying up longterm and that cost money, I think fans should look at the bigger picture, it's gona hurt us in the short term but it's for the best for the future of the franchise.

I ain't gonna lie. It's too damm early in the morning for all this gloom and doom. Where is it written we have to take two steps back in order to continue to improve?

There are plenty of things to be done before we even start OTAs. Maybe, just maybe, we will be fine. Why don't we wait and see how this all works out before we throw in the towel?

Or not. After all, it is the offseason. A perfect time to wax poetically on worst case scenarios. Or...we can keep the faith that we really do have people in charge that happen to know what they are doing. That we can be even better next year than we were last year.

The future is too bright to fret over negative what ifs.

I agree completely with Rayzor in that we should really trust Gettleman.

That being said if we were to cut Smith in a salary cap move, we now have zero WR receptions from last year on the team...  Ginn is a FA, and could get big money else where.  Hixon might not return simply because he kind of got a raw deal here.  Lafell might not be brought back based on performance.  I can't see it as a good thing to do this to Cam.  Then throw in the possibility of tossing Olsen for cap reasons...I guess we'd basically have to run the ball all the time in a 3 wing approach a la Georgia Tech...

That's the dominant issue for me.  While I agree that Smith should agree to a pay cut, and that signing Hardy will strap us further (but where else do you get 25 year old edge rushers who can play the heck out of the run?) while we have future commitments looming, we still have to play next season.  Does JR want a team that takes a step backwards next year after 12-4 NFC South Champs?  Or does JR want a team that will draw fans to the Stadium and get them to buy gear.

If the Panthers don't improve, or at least "move the dial," then there are going to be some folks looking for new jobs.  I don't think you can gut the team, then try to offer Cam an extension with the "oh look, we saved some money for you, but set you up for failure."  I just don't see the logic behind it.

Thankfully, what Gettleman showed this past year is that he's going to make the best decisions for the team going forward.  Sure, we do have some nasty contracts and dead money on the books, but he's going to pinch and squeeze a way out of it while still putting a good team out there.

how much over the cap were we last year when gettleman walked into the job and what did he do with it?

color me confident in gettleman to get things squared away.

Difference this year is there's not a Chris gamble that freed up a lot of space in move. The highest cap mover the year is CJ restructuring salary to bonus for a cap savings of about 5M. The other is Godfrey with a June 1 which also makes around 5M. After those 2, most moves gain us below 2M each (Edwards and Blackburn are the highest). No one else has a high salary that we can move into bonus money (exce

But, but, but...worry, worry, worry, fret, fret, fret. It is what the Huddle does best.

We finally have a football guy, and a damm fine one at that, running things. That fact alone allays most of my fears. Gman and Rivera gots this.

So not sure they plan something there)

Overall a lot less moves. Plus factoring in gross returning should hit the cap for perhaps 4-6M

Tldr: less moves this year compared to last year to create cap

Big money will be given out for players.  Hurney did it with only the present in mind.  He was running his office on emotion, not a business sense.

Now, I think Gross would sign for a fairly moderate price.  I could be wrong, he might just walk away, he has been a good pro.

Smith, who knows.  No way we can carry a 35 yr old receiver with an 8 figure salary.  Unless he takes a pay cut, then emotion has to go.

Munnerlyn might get a bigger contract elsewhere, let him.  We cannot afford what we ought to be able to.

And, if this is gonna be a bad year anyway, dump some RBs and get it over.  Stewart is along for the ride it looks like.

How much money do we need? You make it sound like we need to cut, restructure, extend, and redo every contract on the books.

We may not have 50mil like the Raiders, but we are not a clusterfug like them either. Other than Hardy we have no big contracts to worry over. We don't need billions to reload the roster. We may not have the money to sign top flight FAs, but we have, and will have, plenty to do our business.

But I guess I, and a few others, have more faith in the powers that be than most up in here.

Guys I'm not being a doom and gloom merchant, the points I've made are valid, yes whilst I agree it's a wait and see scenario there's no harm in trying to look in and see possible outcomes isn't that being a fan?, I don't want lose hardy, smitty, gross etc I don't wana have to pickup FA that are probably band aids at best if they even work out, I like many fans just want my team to win and I'm passionate about them, so I look in and hope this idea or that is a good thing, it makes me feel positive.

I started the thread because there are far to many made with guess work at best numbers on cap space and players being resigned and gossip etc, this article is probably as realistic as I've read, there is no harm in being concerned and having an opinion on my team, I want them to succeed more than anyone, I was just constructively putting across what a difficult job there is too be done.

Exactly, G-man came in with -15mil to deal with last year and this year he has +15mil and ppl still freaking out.  This is truly a numbers game and Gett's is just playing the perceptions.  If everyone thinks you're cap strapped you can bargain with these guys a little tighter than say in Oakland where they will just say you have all the money and want it.
