Hey gang, crank up the FM stereo tuner and celebrate the reason why you listen to that hard rock/alternative music stuff in the first place. Commercial FM broadcasting began in the U.S. when station W47NV in Nashville, TN started operations on this day in 1941. W47NV was the first commercial FM radio station to receive a license, some 20 years after its AM radio counterpart, KDKA in Pittsburgh. For those of you who don’t remember, FM stands for ‘frequency modulation’ as opposed to ‘amplitude modulation’.

And remember the stereo's that were literally pieces of furniture in your living room to play that music?

The one pictured below is similar to the first stereo I ever owned as a teenager. I bought it from a neighbor for $8 and it cranked! Had a 12", 10" and a couple 4" speakers in it. I replaced the 10" as it was torn and I learned all about vacuum tube electronics. You find a supplier for tubes and you can likely rebuild one of these back to almost new.

We walked to school 4 miles, in a foot of snow, barefoot, up hill both ways.

Actually, back in my day we were so poor that me and my brother only had one pair of shoes between us so I would carry him the first mile and he would carry me the second; we'd switch off everyday. When the snow was really bad, he'd wear one shoe, I'd wear the other and after a mile we'd switch which feet they were on.

All this while living in San Diego.....

FM was so cool, you actually capture the stereo effect in your car without having to listen to a hi-fi phonograph record player.

So I'm told.  ;)

The birth of "free-form" radio began in LA with the AOR station KLOS 95.5 which I grew up on. Jim Ladd, Jeff Gonzer and JJ Jackson were 3 of their premier DJs, and Ladd and Jackson still work in the biz on Sirius/XM stations.

KROQ came on the scene with a more hard rock, metal edge to them and I listened to both until I was leaving for the Navy in 1973.

A dime bag was a wonderbread bag full of pot and it was a dime.

We refered to condoms as " what the fug is that?"

We walked to school 4 miles, in a foot of snow, barefoot, up hill both ways.

    • It can happen but it’s nothing like the NBA. One player doesn’t make the difference in the NFL that one player can in the NBA. Also, there are just not the same amount of trades and even opportunities. Because the NFL isn’t just one stud away, you don’t get a lot of opportunities like Miami did with Tua or the Jets did with Zach Wilson. Both teams got multiple 1sts for players they traded (Jets had 5 1sts in 2021-2022 and Miami had 5 1sts in 2020-2021) and both got top 5 picks to select a QB. They both made some good and bad picks but Miami turned Tua into multiple playoff appearances even though Tua isn’t elite. Wilson was just so bad that the Jets still sucked. We had our opportunity in 2022 where we would have had 6 1sts and 4 2nds in 2023-2025 and probably had a top 5 pick in 2023 or 2024 for a QB without trading up. Unfortunately, Fitterer didn’t have the foresight to realize a full rebuild was necessary and when a team offers you 2 1sts and a 2nd for a non-QB like Tunsil and Burns, you take it. One thing I wish trades had in the NFL that they have in the NBA is protected picks. A moron like Fitterer could have a top 5 protected pick so his terrible GMing doesn’t accidentally give the Bears the #1 overall pick because the moron Fitterer incorrectly thought we were 1 player away from the playoffs.
    • Anyone that believes getting a couple late season wins to end the season at 4-13 while picking 9th in each round, other than 2-15 with the 1st pick in each round is not being realistic.  It happens nearly every other year, Jags gave the browns a insane package to move from 2nd to 5th. If not for late season pointless/everyone forgets late season wins the Panthers would have gotten that franchise changing package. Not to mention Panthers would have had Herbo and Sewell in other years, but nope. Do I need to bring up da bears??? The goal is long term winning in order to make the playoffs, one season to tank could spark it with a Burrow that's gets sacked 60 times on the way to a SB.  I want to win as bad as anyone, but the second the Panthers are eliminated from playoff contention, the ONLY solution is to lose the remaining games to gain a better chance to never do that again. No other answer.
