The New York Jets QB Situation

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

He took an offense with damn near zero talent at the receiving positions, won the division and won in the playoffs.

It's not 8-8 with 12 TD's and 21 INT's, but impressive nonetheless.

The nature of the sport, everyone get to see what they wanna see. At the end everyone's happy. I'm sure if you wanted to you could argue that peyton had no receivers as well and be content with that thought. Stay happy, playa!

Absolutely @Jackofalltrades.

Brady was flat out impressive with the lack of talent.  I saw alot of their games (sunday ticket) and those receivers flat out could not ball.  Funny that Lafell is an upgrade over all his guys from last year.

Even in Vick's prime, his passing stats couldn't matchup with Jake Delhomme. Now he's older and can't move like he used to and so he has to rely more on his passing. Not to mention he can't even stay healthy. Jets QB situation didn't get that much better.

It will if Smith gets better, along with the Jets OC.

Smith was much maligned last year. However, he was a rookie QB who didn't have much support, so he basically was left hung out to dry.

People, like to compare YOUNG QB's lately. But Kaep, RG3 and Wilson all had great running games they could rely on (and offenses tailored to them); hiding many of their flaws in the passing game.

Granted, Geno's not Cam, Luck, or even Tannehill. Those guys can look good or decent, basically on their own. However, he's better than many give him credit for. And he's certainly someone they can hope for in the future.

Ummm, Jets had the 6th ranked running game last year and had a better YPC than we did.

He had the 11th ranked defense behind him too.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. And I did add to my post.

Kaep, Wilson, and RG3, all had offenses tailored to hide their deficiencies, along with their strong running games.

And say what you want about the Jets running game; it just didn't look that good to me.

Take the Panthers high ranked running game. It's a mirage. Cause every one knows, that the Panthers running game was very inconsistent last year, and Cam couldn't rely on them to fool the defense for deep throws. It was all on Cam it seemed.

So you can't always go by statistics.

There was a time when you looked for a rookie QB to show you glimpses... and I think that is what Smith did.

Do I think he's going to be a top QB in this league?  Probably not.

But he could turn out to be a solid starter with the right pieces and development time.  I dunno if that'll happen, but I think it's too early to claim he's washed up.

I never said or implied he was washed up. Simply stated he has a lot of work to do.

ahh okay.  then we're in agreement.  this thread seemed to imply that he was based on the idea that there's a major shitfest here.

I don't see bringing in Vick as that bad.  He's a veteran presence, he may help Geno's development by guiding him and helping him see the field how he used to, etc.  Vick is not the player he once was, even he knows that... never know what wisdom he may have gained.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
