Since when does a GM and HC have to have the same opinion as each other?

Perhaps Gettleman thought Smitty would hinder the younger guys capability to lead and then said as much...

If you actually read the article Rivera never said he thought Smitty should stay and that everyone was being evaluated, then reiterated that point.

Rivera clearly also wanted to have the younger guys come in and have the opportunity to develop...and it goes without saying that no one in the FA was willing to pay Smith his contract for the #s he was putting up...but that is something that would never come out publicly.

it helps tremendously for them to be on the same page to avoid media confusion.

the above highlighted is a distraction

wasn't about him staying but why he was released...the hinder young ppl is BS, and if it was about his contract just say so i could understand that more then saying he would hinder younger guys.

1) Football FO don't care about media

2) It isn't BS if they say it isn't (hence it actually happened)

3) No one would come out and say its about the money, find a situation where the FO came out and said "Yea we released this guy because he was set to make way too much money in the next few years"

Why would you release one of your best players without a backup plan?  In this case there was not even a backing up backup plan.

It was a poor decision.

Any way you slice it it was a bad decision but it is done. I like Cotchery and The Hair signings though. We may be surprised.

I was watching News14 or something like that earlier today and they had a blip about Smith being gone.

I think I am coming to the conclusion that Steve Smith being gone will likely be a bigger distraction then him being here - at least thru OTA's, camp and a game or two.  If the Panthers struggle it could rear it's head again - but the Charlotte media doesn't really go after the Panthers to call them out on it should things go wrong.

But, it's definitely a bigger distraction now as a subject then he was an a player.  That has to be saying something.  Not sure what.  But it is.

No. It won't be a distraction in the locker room and that's all that matters. The fans' preoccupation with this subject is the fans' preoccupation, but you can't project that onto the team. When it comes time to play football all they'll care about is the 53 guys in the locker room. Steve won't be one of them.

He dropped two passes in the Arizona game - I can't honestly recall another drop. But his drop percentage was basically the same as 2012.

%'s  from that broad perspective dont tell the whole story. Smitty wasnt downfield trying to come up with 40 and 50 yard heaves with two guys in his face like he usually was most of his career. He wasnt put into the position to do so but because he obviously has lost some speed and bounce in his step. Still, he dropped a lot of short an intermediate distance passes that he would always come up with earlier in his career. Smitty used to have damn near flawless hands. Easily as good if not better than Olsen's.

Think back to the types of passes Smitty used to get and what he would do to even make the attempt to catch it. Jake tossin the ball in to the rafters and Smitty doin ninja flips in the air and still keeping two feet in bounds after running it down. Of course he's gonna have drops when he's going for circus catches every other drive right?

So, who can say why that is for sure right now? Most will say he's old but I would think Cam's size and touch on the ball probably has a slight bit more heat than Jake's. I never heard of Smitty ripping webbing on his hands with Jake throwin at him. Can anyone really say that his hands skill degraded because he got old? LoL, his eyes maybe? haha idk bout that.

edit: and I doubt it was his nerves.
