Panthers Sign Avant to 1 Year Deal

Recommended Posts

We aren't talking extrapolation, we are talking about actualities.

Sure we are talking extrapolations. Actualities are in the past.  We are looking at both groups and deciding if they will be equal in talent.  You can't for example compare Underwood with what he did last year when he had a rookie for a QB versus Cam who can actually throw a great deep ball anymore than you could talk about Ginn 2 years ago who caught 2 passes with what he did last year for the Panthers.  What we are doing is looking at the players and extrapolating what they will do this year good or bad.

We were able to compete with the same or less and we haven't even drafted yet.

Wrong. Steve Smith with one arm and on one leg is better than anything we currently have by far. He may have been old, but he still commanded respect from defenses. Each of these "awesome" signings only put up the numbers they did because they were playing in extremely deep and talented WR corps. These guys individually are very unimpressive, and combined without a true number one are pathetic.

This current group is nothing to write home about.

I have a friend who is die hard eagles fan, watches every game etc.  I asked him what he thought about this signing and this is what he said.  Take it for what its worth.  I am happy about it.

"He is really good. He was out slot and has tight hands and can jump and hold the ball. Great Pick Up"

don't read it then! Lafell was better than Avant so this is not a reall exciting or even encouraging move.

In what way?

Also kind of tough to not read it when he quotes my post just to Ctrl+V what he posts everywhere else.

Then what's the point of having a #1 Draft pick who's a once in a lifetime talent at QB if you just want him to play keep away. Cam needs to be the reason we win games, not the reason we don't lose them. Maximize his talent or you might as well be the guy in the Lamborghini that never goes over 35 MPH

Are you a Cam fan or a panther fan? A win is a win in the NFL. Cam is the reason we won that game against NO and I don't recall him throwing for 400yds.

That's good point, people forget Steve Smith was in a #1 role here, these guys were just compliment pieces on their teams. We all saw what happened to the offense when Steve got hurt.

I'm a Panther fan which is why I'm against paying a guy 100 million dollars to be a game manager, which is the salary Cam will demand.

Listen, I want for Cam to absolutely tear it up as much as the next guy but if we ran a fast paced no huddle offense the defense would see the field a lot more often and would get worn down and give up more points. I guess we could switch to that strategy if we wanted to but having long drives and keeping the defense off the field worked last season for the most part so I seriously doubt Rivera will switch strategies now. We still need a home run threat though, which is why getting either Lee/Cooks/OBJ in the draft is so crucial in my opinion.

    • Right, so basically what I said in my first post about this last night. Tepper needs to use that big wallet of his in one of the few ways it can be used in the NFL given the cap.   Give Scourton a bigger signing bonus but not a fully guaranteed deal. Everyone wins in that scenario as if Scourton is smart and hires good money people, he'll take that bigger signing bonus and use it to make more money in the end over the next 4 years than if he just had his fully guaranteed deal and a smaller signing bonus.
    • It is all confusing and layered. SB is the cash you get very soon within weeks or in simple terms, its what you get to sign the paper work. Players and agents can agree on contract but what to "wait" to sign......teams don't like that cause you can "Carlos Boozer" yourself. In order to get that ink dry, while keeping the contract the same, portion it as a bonus to "sign" and get the funds with ________ .   * But Ive seen worded contracts that split the SB or a 20% to a later date. The beans counters can fill in the details about why certain dates are better and save the team money.. Theres tricks to the trade and accounting is full of them.    Ugh another big layer, is SB can be used to manipulate cap and players. Ill try to give a example that makes enough sense. Believe it or not having a owner like Tepper is a cheat code for this. He has cash in hand, where as Mark Davis had problem making pay roll and had to move the team to Vegas....... Tepper can give you 100,000,000 SB right now and the team can spread out the cap hit. Another owner doesn't have or want to give the player 100,000,000 in cash, but offered the same guaranteed contract in roster bonuses fully guaranteed over the next few years........ Which one do you want??? Everyone wants the money now, not before another inflation waves hits in 2 years. So it does 'pay" to have a owner like tepper that's able to have real cash on hand, while it also works GREAT for cap help. Heres a good video, if you can stand coked up pat and mask look-a-like AJ
