Well, the Niners just doomed themselves to mediocrity
tukafan21 replied to LinvilleGorge's topic in Carolina Panthers
Hmmmmm, sounds like a familiar fear And sure, a big part of my fear was the injury concern (that will always follow Bryce around) but the everything else I said is the same. If he's too good to let walk in FA but not good enough to justify a top end contract, we're in the worst possible situation -

how much of that is Kyle Shanahan though ? Don't get me wrong Purdy is not a bad QB, but to me he is pretty average -

the scariest part of Bryce to me is what if he's good not great? Because that's how you end up with Tua contracts I wouldn't be surprised if very soon we see teams moving on from average QBs or letting them test free agency. Tepper has invested a ton in analytics I could see us doing it too. 9ers are different because this is Shannahans guy. But the dolphins i bet you are loathing having paid Tua too early. -

Eh, not convinced he's a bum, but also not saying he's a star either. If there was any coaching staff in recent memory that was worse than ours with Rhule, it was the Jets staff during Darnold's time there. I honestly just don't think we really know who Darnold is as a player yet because of it, this season will be very telling, he genuinely could be a bust or a solid above average starter and I wouldn't be surprised either way. -

Not saying you are wrong but Baker had a ton of success prior to us and Darnold was a massive bust. Basically the best he has ever been was last season on an insanely loaded roster with an insanely loaded coaching staff. He is a bum. -
Fox's McKenna says we win the division enjoy this exerpt Interesting that we are in the longest playoff drought ever. A little odd for a team that has never had back to back winning seasons. But we are an odd franchise. More at the link. Also, has us losing in our first playoff game, but I'll take it.

Darnold and Baker both bombed here with the same team and coaching and then both went on to look pretty darn good afterwards. I'm not saying Darnold (or Baker) is some elite QB, but I don't put their issues here on either of them, that staff was a joke. -

I dont get it either. I would take Purdy over Bryce 10 out of 10 -
The only way to fix it, is to go to 16 teams in playoffs, first week would be top 2 teams in division play for the division title. The second week then go by records. Since we have division’s, we need a reward for division leaders if we go to conference records, top teams should be in the playoffs. no divisions, play all teams in your conference with 2 out of conference games. Then I could see them using conference standing for the playoff seedings

I don’t get the hate for Purdy. You don’t put up those kind of numbers in a 3 year period just because you’re on a good team or have good coaching. Despite all the injuries to his own team and injuries to himself he still had a 96 qb rating and has a qb rating of 104.9 in 3 years over 40 games. Heck he was in the mvp race in the 2023 season. -

I wonder if Team Bryce realizes that this year he is playing for his next contract; that this is make or break for him. If he doesn’t shoot the lights out this year, I don’t think the team passes on the QB’s coming out next year. Better won’t be enough to keep the team from drafting another first round QB. We’ve given him the tools, including T-Mac. No more excuses. He needs to look like the number 1 pick. -

One could argue the same for Goff(far better than Jimmy G, mind you). I think fans often get enamored with the Tier 2 and even Tier 3 QB's at times. Hell, portions of our fanbase are STILL fooled by Sam Darnold, despite him bombing so badly here. -

Which is completely irrelevant to the current conversation. They've doomed themselves to what we've historically been by making a really dumb call. For such an offensive guru, Shanahan sure has made some dumb calls at QB. First the Lance debacle and now the Purdy contract. I don't give them much credit for "finding" Purdy with the last pick in the draft, same as I don't really credit the Pats for "finding" Brady in the 6th. Everyone in the league passed those guys up over and over again. It was just horse poo luck. -

Panthers would get the chance but straight up with the contract and all the morgan should send bryce packing for purdy in a fictional world. The contract isnt even that large its 7th in the nfl average and by next year will be 15th at least with new qbs getting deals. Nfl qbs get paid when they play well maybe b young will get a chance to get paid one day but he has a long long ways to go to ever reach purdys bad year -

Decently so but nowhere near the threat that Hurts is. You have to actively prepare for Hurts as a runner, especially in short yardage situation. It's just in the back of your mind with Purdy. You just can't completely discount his ability to scramble but it's not something you're actively preparing for. -

We haven't had back to back winning seasons as a franchise in 3 decades. Im not going to criticize another team that's making the playoffs on a regular basis. There isn't anyone on this board who wouldn't be thrilled if we had done what the 9ers have done the past few years. I'd take the mediocrity the 49ers have experienced over the slog through the sewer that has been the Panthers since Tepper bought the team. -

We watched Jimmy Garoppolo get to the Super Bowl with most of the same great team, how much did his career change when he was asked to carry a team like in Vegas? -

I would counter that although he is certainly not Hurts/Jackson, Purdy is pretty mobile. Surprisingly so, at times. -

100%. I may not think a lot of him as a player but I am happy for him as a person for getting that bag. Especially as Mr. Irrelevant. Great story, even if he doesn't get to the ultimate NFL heights. -

Just a winner? He went 6-9 last year. Just because a guy got carried to the SB by elite surrounding talent doesn't mean much. How did Nick Files pan out after catching lightning on a bottle? -

Hurts is an elite threat with his legs though. He's gonna stress an opposing DC a lot more than Brock Purdy. -

Um, no, just no. Bills, Chiefs, Chargers, Ravens, Bengals, Texans, Eagles, Commanders are 8 teams that it's not even a debate, they aren't trading their QB for Purdy. Patriots, Broncos, Titans, Giants, Bears, Vikings, Falcons are 7 more teams with QBs drafted in the last 2 years that also would rather stick with them than trade for Purdy as they all have more upside than he does. Lions, Packers, Cowboys, Bucs are 4 more that would likely keep their QB's as well, age aside for Goff, Dak, and Baker. Panthers and Colts are two teams in the same situation, QB's who have both struggled and shown flashes to where the teams probably stick with them because they drafted them, but in a re-draft of all QB's, they probably take Purdy over the guy they currently have. Jags, Cardinals, Dolphins, are 3 more with QB's who probably have a higher upside than Purdy but come with their own question marks, so debatable if they'd take Purdy over who they already have. That leaves Jets, Raiders, Steelers, Browns, Saints, Seahawks, and Rams. Rams would take him over Stafford for the future of course, but not for 2025, and I'd think the Seahawks would take him over Darnold, but honestly not sure if they would take him over Milroe at this moment as they really like his potential and have him for 4 years really cheap. That leaves 5 teams that I see who would absolutely take him over their current situation right now, and a handful of others who MIGHT take him over their current guy, a far cry from your 20. -
Agreed. Also as soon as they received the top pick in the next draft it was over. Bears won that trade. Gave up a top overall pick got one the next year plus pick 9, a couple 2nds, and DJ Moore a proven young WR. Had their 2024 pick from us be in the late teens or later it would be more debatable IMO.
