Carolina Panthers - Baltimore Ravens Joint Practice 1
kungfoodude replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
This is basically what I expected. That was why I thought that this "top 10 defense" stuff was nonsense. That secondary is largely very, very inexperienced players. It's gonna take some time before they are elite. -
Carolina Panthers - Baltimore Ravens Joint Practice 1

It doesn't need to be addressed. Everyone is well aware that fan enthusiasm isn't going to be high for a bust QB. As I said, it is what it is. The only thing that is going to change that dynamic is winning games and Darnold playing well. So, for the purposes of this thread, why don't we just close this part of the discussion? -

Look, there is really no reason to beat the PJ war drums at the moment. He ain't selling poo for jerseys either, even if he was a starter. Darnold is the guy, plenty of us have qualms about that but it just is what it is. Let's not derail the practice thread with this stuff. Let's just save those for the umpteen Darnold or PJ threads we already have and the dozens yet to come.- 270 replies

What was learned from Preseason Week 1
kungfoodude replied to DaveThePanther2008's topic in Carolina Panthers
He was fairly effective last year. IMO, the biggest issue was continuing to invest in a developmental player that was 29 years old. By the time he may get completely proficient(which is really an if), he would be either nearing retirement or already had started losing a step. It sucked to lose him because he was such a great story but I don't think anyone can be upset with the guys we replaced him with. Our offseason DL additions were pretty fantastic, IMO. -

The guy you are talking to isn't going to learn. Trust me, it's hard enough to just have a simple discussion with him and for him not to get emotionally invested in his arguments. This offseason added a lot of goofy people to this place. -
The Ravens are coming, The Ravens are coming

Yeah, the injury part is somewhat true. But, we also loaded the roster with injury prone free agents(some of whom have already been injured at least once this offseason). I don't like the sitting them all, simply because I think the reps are valuable for young players. That said, this is also going to be the longest season in NFL history. While we may bitch now about this new trend of only playing backups in the preseason, more teams are going to be inclined to do that with these lengthened seasons. It will be interesting to see how the NFL responds as ratings and fan participation drop in the preseason. -

Not sure if you are aware but you are supposed to cull out the stats that don't support whatever narrative you are pushing. It's Huddle Logic 101. Just a list of coaches/records without any filtering is perilously close to factual information. We can't have that around here. -

I hope it takes less time than it did with Whitehead to realize what a bum he is. -

He seems to be manipulating what the narrative is for whatever purpose he wants. It's definitely interesting. I don't fault him for that. It's more amusing than anything. -
I have seen these things(media of all sorts) destroy people's lives and well being on a consistent and unfortunately accelerating basis. The more people that realize these platforms don't have to control your life, the better off society will be. Life is meant to be lived out in the real world and not through a little glowing screen.

I wouldn't put too much stock into those interviews. Rhule is interesting in the way he "uses" those platforms. He's saying a lot without saying a lot. -

We need this from coaches to players more than most NFL teams do. From top to bottom in the organization, we are green as hell and this type of stuff helps accelerate everyone's learning curve. It also gives the coaches a great look at our deficiencies and what needs to be improved on. I don't think this will necessarily pay off in a noticeable way this season but I think it will pay off in the coming seasons. -
Social media was great at it's inception but it is literally rewiring people's brains and making them unhappy. Of the limited amounts that I use, it's for specific hobbies and interests and absolutely zero percent for what they want you to use it for. Anytime any media(internet or TV alike) is impacting your mental health, time to turn it the fug off.

Yeah, that college to NFL path is a low probability route. I do think these guys seem to want to get better at this enough that they will keep striving to improve. I don't think you could say that about guys like Spurrier, Kelly, Saban, Petrino, etc. You have to be willing to put in the work and these guys appear to be willing to do that. -

Yeah, he is one of the most toxic posters here. Hence why he is on my ignore list. His description of it is "permeating his social life" is a clear sign that you need to step away. If an internet message board(or social media site or whatever internet hole you choose) is impacting your personal life....it's time for some self reflection and probably this....

Listen, you definitely aren't wrong about them needing to adjust to the NFL. I think outside of the most delusional of our fanbase, we mostly all accept that to a certain degree. However, in their defense, we did get pitched that this was a long rebuild. The owner warned the fans about that. I do think "over their heads" is a bit strong. I think they are still navigating their learning curve. Let me put it this way, was last season not a genuine surprise with how well we performed? I was fully ready to see a 0-4 win team that was getting blasted off the field almost every week. That didn't happen. Despite having probably the least talented overall roster in the NFL, we were competitive in almost every game. In my mind, that puts us a bit ahead of schedule. So, while we are critical of them(I know I definitely am) we also need to accept that they are still kind of figuring everything out too. I am sure after hearing Grier's comments this week and seeing the structure of our training camp, Teddy's comments about the staff not really practicing situational stuff last season was probably true(also note that we didn't have normal circumstances last offseason). But, guess what we practiced a lot this offseason, situational football. At the bare minimum, that has to show some level of learning and change. Do I ultimately think this is the staff to stabilize this franchise? I don't know. I think the "culture" aspect is underrated by fans and I think they seem to be doing a good job of building that for us. So, as much as I will bitch about the staff, I am actually hopeful that these are the guys. It's just after 3 straight losing seasons(likely to stretch to 4 this year) and only 7 total winning seasons....I am going to be a bit grumpy about having to suffer through more bad to mediocre results. -

Well the Panthers "media" made it seem like they wanted him as an OG. So, I don't know what to think about the situation.
