Round 3 - The Carolina Panthers Select DJ Johnson - EDGE - Oregon
Evil Hurney replied to rodeo's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'm less excited about this pick. It sounds like it was a trade up to fill a need b/c the board was getting thin. At lease Ejiro seems excited, so hopefully he'll be able to mold DJ. On the plus side, the trade up was quite cheap from a compensation standpoint. The Steelers should have probably gotten a 5th or 6th from us as well. -
Gotta think there will be some trade backs to pick up some 6ths and 7ths.

Excited about the Mingo pick. I can see why Fitt liked him based on the interview above. One tidbit that I didn't see discussed is around the 4:00 mark, Mingo is asked about Corral. Said that during his visit, Matt told him how much he liked the new coaching staff, how his body feels better, and how he is understanding the offense better than he was last year....Later on he says that if Bryce gives him too much grief for Bama beating Ole Miss that him and Matt will have to gang up on Bryce

REPORT: Anthony Richardson was Panthers QB #2
Evil Hurney replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
But Josh McCown said he was going to play basketball with him. -
IMO, the only trade back that was good value was the Cardinals moving from 3 to 12. They got a good return to do that. The rest of the draft night trades felt like teams moving back for the sake of moving back. No value was gained, they just gave themselves a few more minutes to discuss their draft board. I'm hoping Fitty can extract some value out of pick 39 to help offset the trade ups for Bryce and Corral.

The Jags pick at 27 would have likely cost us the 2nd (#39), 3rd (#93), and one of the 4ths assuming even value. Note that there was a LOT of trades tonight for essentially even value. Depending on the chart you use the Pats moved down (14 ->17) and LOST value! The lack of good trade downs leaves me pessimistic about Fitty's chances of trading down from #39 for decent value tomorrow night.

Matt Corral post to instagram
Evil Hurney replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers
I get being disappointed/frustrated, but he's known the team was taking QB at #1 for months now. Why post that today? It's not like that post was a spur of the moment thing. EDIT: On the plus side I was glad to see him at the voluntary sessions. Control what you can control and put as much good play on film as you can when given the opportunity this preseason. -
CJ Stroud: I’m a football player, not a test taker

Surely CJ knows about Cardale ... right? -

Will Levis #1 to the Panthers Confirmed

I feel dirty just reading the OP. -
Corral still wearing #9. Levis odds surging a few days before the draft. This is not a drill!

The "context" story is most likely about Hendon Hooker (possibly Clayton Tune). To my knowledge CJ Stroud (as well as B. Young, W. Levis, A. Richardson) didn't take part in an All-Star game this season. As far as the 2nd guy? I didn't get enough clues, but probability would suggest Stroud as he would be the biggest outlier on the leaked list ... possibly AR. I doubt any of the 90's scores are the incorrect ones since he made a point to talk about context and re-testing. The leaked list I assume is being used:

$5M for a season of Robinson ... wouldn't have minded that. Oh well, WR room must be full up.
-
He's already got 1 ring and may get a 2nd out of this.
-
I like the idea of reinforcing a strength. Both G's ended the season on IR. There is no guarantee Corbett returns to form. Good interior OL are typically available on day 2 and 3; whereas good OT almost always requires a high pick.

Crowd was just itching to get excited, then the WR dropped the ball.

Panthers to Send 11 Representatives to Ohio St Pro Day
Evil Hurney replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
The more interesting thing to me is that there isn't a single high ranking individual from the Texans or Colts expected to be in attendance. -
It's basically a 2-year contract with a team option for a 3rd year. AAV if cut after 1 year = $15M AAV if cut after 2 years = $9.3M AAV if full contract (3 years) = $8.3M

Realstic Options Given Remaining Cap Space???
Evil Hurney replied to Hoenheim's topic in Carolina Panthers
The top FA WR are gone for $11M/yr this season. Anyone left in FA should cost less and is not viewed a long term WR1. Prudent teams will likely wait for A) FA asking price to come down, B) a WR they like falling to them in the draft, or C) another team to oversign/overdraft at WR and be forced to give a WR away (ala Amari Cooper). Spotrac has DJ Chark estimated for $9.5M/year and Mecole Hardman for $10.3M/year. Is that a reasonable pay rate for an at best WR2 (in the teams eyes)? Cap wise either can fit since you can always account for their paycheck in a later season. Also keep in mind that TE Hurst is a receiver signing. The team didn't have to pay WR prices though. It's one of the ways the Chiefs hacked together a useable receiving core; paying their top guy TE money. -
Recent history suggests that a rookie TE has a very low chance of making an impact in year 1 compared to their cousin the rookie WR. If the Panthers were to take one of the top TEs they would most likely need time to develop; having the other TEs on the roster for "this season" shouldn't really impact the long-term thinking that occurs during the draft.

What Veteran QB Do We Sign to Mentor the Rookie QB?
Evil Hurney replied to tukafan21's topic in Carolina Panthers
As others have said. The Vets job isn't to be a mentor. The reason you bring in a vet is to have a floor on the level of QB play for the season and give the rookie a minimum level of play to exceed before starting.
