Official New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers Gameday Thread!

I'll take it, but man some of these penalities on hits today have been rough. -
What if Darnold gets hurt? I'll take Minshew > Walker all day everyday.

Great half. This is what it's supposed to look like when your opponent is missing half their roster and coaching staff. Whatever. You play whoever shows up. Gotta capitalize when handed a gift and we got one today. -
Graham Gano has now made 34 straight field goals

It operates off of an arbitrary definition of a fairly vague term but you have to have firm definitions to create a data set. I don't have an issue with it. I suspect your issue with it is that it shoots big holes in your preconceived ideas. -

Kasay, but the data bears out that he sucked in the clutch too. And he did have the worst day for a kicker I've ever seen in the first Panthers game I attended live. We lost to the Eagles that day by 9 and Kasay left 10 on the field missing three FGs and an XP. We did go to the SB though... where as we all know he proceeded to miss the entire field. -

Go back. I linked it. Clutch kicks numbers from 1985 to 2019. -
Agreed. He's always gonna be one of those good backup/marginal starter types. You can still make a LOT of money being that though.
-
Wait for it. There's a reason Elway always looked for a big armed QB and it wasn't just because he had a helluva arm himself. He played in Denver. He knows you have to be able to drive the ball through that cold wind. Early in the season it's usually quite pleasant playing conditions. That generally takes a considerable turn for the worst come November.
-
Meh, I want to let him survive to take his drubbing when Teddy inevitably hits the wall again 5-6 games in. Then we can ban him. He'll hit the wall even harder in Denver. I've been to a LOT of games at Mile High. Way more at Mile High than at BOA. Post-Halloween there's almost always considerable wind. Those dying ducks won't come close to cutting it.

Panthers fandom and baffling depth chart decisions have gone hand in hand for so long at this point I'm just numb to it. We sure are living dangerously on the OL considering three of our starters and a primary backup have all had considerable injury issues in recent years.

Oh, they definitely have very significant resources. I'd have no desire to live in SoCal, but other than that USC is an ideal powerhouse coaching opportunity. An overall weak power five conference is a competitive advantage. Yes, that recruiting hot bed is very much an advantage. They've been down for several years so immediate expectations wouldn't be crushing. If say Nick Saban retired and you took the Bama job the expectation would be to compete for a national championship year one in a crowded conference. That wouldn't be the case at USC. Unless you're a total dumpster fire as long as it looks like you have the bus headed back in the right direction you're probably not going to have major expectations and potentially be facing the hot seat until year three. USC is an ideal situation IMO, with the one huge caveat being that I know absolutely nothing about the institution other than that it has supported a powerhouse football program in relatively recent years.

Yeah, all but one season his team sucked. Par for the course. I'm not saying he's a bad overall kicker. He's a GREAT kicker on kicks that aren't clutch. He's one of the worst of the past three decades on kicks that are clutch. The data bears it out. -

It doesn't matter when the data set is only considering kicks that are to tie or for the lead. For all intents and purposes, those kicks are essentially equal. You're trying or winning if they're made, you're losing if they're not. -
Speaking of USC... WTF??? Maybe don't put all the linemen in the back next time.
-
He knows how to pick investments. It's TBD whether or not he can run an effective football organization. Moving money around to make more money is a lot different than running a football organization.
-
I'm not completely sold on Rhule ultimately working out, but if he bounced for USC it would be a really, REALLY bad sign. Like five alarm fire bad sign. He got everything he wanted here. NFL HC job. Final say on virtually all things football related. If he ran out on that knowing the chances of getting it right out of the gate again in the future would be slim to none, then IMO there's something about Tepper that ran him off despite being given everything he wanted or at least it appearing that way from the outside looking in.
-
Can't see it happening. Seems to me that Rhule wanted to be an NFL HC but wanted the right situation where he basically had full control. Well, that's what he got. If he jumped ship barely over a year after getting that he'll probably never get it again. College opportunities will still be there if he fails at the NFL level. Maybe not USC level opportunities, but good opportunities none the less.

The ones he missed. Not many. -

But they're not. It's only about kicks that can tie or create a lead. Regardless of the actual points scored, those kicks are basically equal. -

He's a career 63% 50+ yard kicker. He's a career 83% 40-49 yard kicker. The guy just sucks at clutch kicks. -

It would be unfair to count XPs back in the day when missing an XP was an extreme rarity. That would falsely inflate the numbers. -

XPs simply didn't count toward the data prior to them getting moved back. 33 yards is shorter than the average distance for every kicker on the list. Having XPs count toward his clutch numbers shortened his overall average distance and gave him an advantage versus kickers who kicked their entire career prior to this change. Take away those XPs and Gano's clutch percentage likely stops. Maybe considerably. -
Before we turn the page on this game, I just want to give everyone on the Huddle a shoutout for having more NFL career receiving yards than Jets' 2nd round pick and #34 overall pick Elijah Moore! 1 catch for -3 yards with multiple drops. Yikes. It was a rough debut. You. Yes you reading this. You have more NFL receiving yards than Elijah Moore.

So it actually helps Gano since he benefits from that skew. Still one of the worst.
