I completely disagree. If one is 20 years old and doesn't have the sense to understand what a contract is, shouldn't be signing them. And from what I understand, these guys have agents advising them. Once the contract is signed, both the school and the individual signing should be bound by it as long as it follows the law. Otherwise, what is the point of the contract?

I agree. I don't know if Bryce will be the guy for us, but there is enough there to keep going with him, for now. I think most people forget that when Cam started here, the talent around him was Greg Olsen, Steve Smith, Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Young had a terrible group of receivers outside of Thielen. In fact, of all the tight ends and receivers that we had that year, the only one still playing is Tommy Tremble. There might be a couple of them on practice squads or IR.

Not a Duke fan, so I hope he leaves. That being said, I am glad Duke is suing him. If you sign a contract, both sides should have to honor it. And there should be penalties if said contract is not honored. And I don't really blame Miami that much. This is mostly on Mensah.

And Stroud ended the year on a horrible note, with 10-12 turnovers in his last five games. Just goes to show that unless you have one of the truly elite qb's (and there are maybe 3-4 of those in the entire league, you have to have the right combination of talent around the qb, and the right coaching staff to truly know what you have.

Did Sam Donald win the lottery or something. If you mean the Seahawks qb, don't give a crap about him one way or the other. I just hope the Tarheel loses. It is amusing how so many on this board hated Darnold, and he left and got more success. And now a seemingly similar percentage (if not the same posters) hates Young. Which is why I largely ignore the rants about Young here.

I agree. In truth, I think starting from the beginning actually hurts most qb's. A few can overcome it, more cannot.
-
If we had kept Darnold and signed him to a longer contract, half the fanbase would have howled. And would likely not accept him until he won a Superbowl or two.
-
If Darnold is limited, then the vast majority of NFL quarterbacks are limited. I personally don't think he is that limited. Strong arm, decent mobility and accuracy. His problem was that he would play great but then make one or two boneheaded mistakes that would cost the team the game. He seems to have mostly eliminated that issue, but it took a while.

It wasn't one bad game. In his last five games of the season (regular and playoff), he had 8 interceptions and at least 2 fumbles lost. That is a pretty bad stretch that will be on his mind the entire off season.

Sam Darnold can’t throw the ball past the line of scrimmage.

I agree. And Sam Darnold year three was worse than Bryce Young year three. But there are so many things that go into it. What kind of a team does the qb have around them? How well do they interact with the receivers and offensive line. How well do the coach and qb interact? Does the coaches offensive philosphy match well with the qb's skills? -

I think they got it right, mostly. I mean it was a backwards pass. -

I guess we just saw why he is a backup. What a terrible decision. Throw it away earlier, or take the sack. -

And he does seem to learn from his mistakes and deals better with crunch time pressure. Not sure if he will ever be elite, but the number of elite qb's is so small, that the odds of getting one are very slim. We are going to give Young at least one more year to see if he is good enough to help the team become a contender. As we should. -
Big Ben on drafting a QB and roster building
Davidson Deac II replied to NAS's topic in Carolina Panthers
Does Mahomes not count as highly drafted? He was top 10. But I generally agree. Drafting a QB in the top five is not usually successful. QB is such a crapshoot anyway. -
If memory serves, Andy Reid went to the Superbowl in his sixth season as a head coach. And Donovan Mcnabb was in his sixth season as well. That being said, I think that is more because the vast majority of coaches don't last more than five years unless they win a superbowl. For that matter, the vast majority of NFL don't make it much past 3 years.

Dan Morgan: Panthers will pickup BY’s 5th year.

We played three division winners, along with wildcard teams Buffalo, San Francisco, Green Bay and Los Angeles. I doubt the schedule would be much tougher next year. The division might be though. -

Regarding the early games, it will help a lot if we have some consistency in the receiving corps. In the early part of this season, his best receiver was a rookie, his go to guy (Thielen) went to another team, and if memory serves, Sanders and Coker were injured. And Leggette has some issues. I think some of you greatly under estimate how important familarity and being in sync with receivers can be for a QB. -

This is definitely, beyond a doubt, the right move. Bryce improved this year. In part because he got more comfortable, and in large part due to having better receivers. If he continues to improve, then sign him long term. If not, then get ready to draft someone else. -
Both QB's played poorly. I do think that NE is a much tougher out for them. If Stroud plays like he did last night, they could easily get blown out. But if Stroud avoids the mistakes, the Texans defense is good enough to win the game for them.
-
Purdy has one of the better offensive coaches in the NFL on the sidelines. That helps a little.
-
It will be interesting to see how they react to facing a defense like the Texans.
-
So use the Browns as a Model?
-
Well, if they had a time machine to look at the future, they could have picked up Tyler Shough in the draft. I sorta wish they had.
-
I won't be surprised if Malik ends up in Pittsburgh. And unless the Steelers revamp their offense, it will not go well for him.
