Good Observer article on Teddy and other QB stuff
musicman replied to ladypanther's topic in Carolina Panthers
Teddy was also brought in because of the uncertainty with Cam and his health. Covid prevented us from seeing Cam up close when they needed to know if he was healthy. If they did, I have a feeling that might have rolled with him for last year without an extension. Teddy was a good risk. Last year, he didn't have a O-line and CMC but more then that, Teddy hasn't played a full season in years. With no training camp to really get in football shape, I think he wore out towards the end. If he's our QB next year (draft pick or not), I can see a better Teddy with a better O-line and a healthy CMC and a better defense to get off the field on 3rd down. -
ESPN Predicts Watson to be the Panthers starter in 2021
musicman replied to Big Sexy's topic in Carolina Panthers
Watson had a great year last year... but the team didn't. if we give away the farm to get him and have to pay him a lot, it will be the same as in Houston. Not enough talent around him and that's a 4-12 team. I would love to have Watson but not at the price it will cost to get him. We need a team around any QB we have before thinking SB. Even Mahomes struggled in the SB with no real O-line (I know it was injuries but the point is the same). -
What if KK restructured and took a big pay cut knowing he may not get a decent new deal from someone else? He's a great guy (locker room and community presence) and 2018 was not his fault (Washington was the DC). He's got some thread left as he's rested the last 2 years.

Not every released vet is going to get a nice paycheck. With a lower cap, some will be left with their hands out and will take lower (kind of like Clowney last year, couldn't get what he wanted). I really believe they will get several starters in FA and then let the draft fall. I would get a Mariota f(lower cap) or developing a draft pick or in case we can't get one. I like Teddy but how could he play where he wasn't wanted? If we can get a 4th round pick (or nay pick) just for them to take his salary that would be great). I was really hoping Teddy was gonna work out. But let's face it. The Bucs are the team to beat for at least 2021, and GB, Buffalo along with KC are all near or at the top of their game. Let's just look to build for 2022 and beyond. Get young and strong, build depth and a complete roster that by the draft and FA of 2022, their's only a few holes to fill, not as much as we have now. In 2020 I just wanted to see a spark. In 2021 I want to see progress, win some tough ones, a nice come back or two. By 2022 I would love to see a powerhouse mentioned along with KC, GB, etc. Just being realistic.

PFT: Orlando Brown Jr wants to be traded
musicman replied to JawnyBlaze's topic in Carolina Panthers
If we can get him and not give up our 1st, we should to it. Then either QB or another top player (CB or LB) and then a OL in the 3rd and we'd be sitting nicely. -
Sewell won't make it to 8. Would love it and would jump on him picking him too.

The SB showed us about having a solid O-line
musicman replied to musicman's topic in Carolina Panthers
Sounds like we all agree. You need a good O-line to compete, Elite QB or not. yes, we want a franchise QB but until we build that O-line, it doesn't matter was my point. I also think that defense made a difference too. 2 great LBs and JPP being like a Burns. They cover the run and pass so well. -
Turner/Boston admit that the refs screwed us in SB50
musicman replied to Mol3m4n's topic in Carolina Panthers
Exactly. -
Mahomes magic could not get it done. He was running for his life. Brady didn't play lights out. He had a good line and game plan. But the Bucs LB's were killer and they put pressure on QBs and knew how to cover a great TE's. Having Mahomes and all that weapons did nothing for them. All the talk of having a franchise QB doesn't mean a lot when you don't have a team around him. Look at both teams for confirmation. All the talk of how bad we need a franchised QB is not the end all - be all answer. We need Moton back and a solid LT ASAP (draft or FA). Maybe when the cap lower next season, someone will be available that we didn't expect.

No it's not. Brees helped the Saints fix their problem. He wasn't getting the "salary" anyway, just like Luke didn't. They let him keep his bonuses. It cuts the cap, not kicked it down the road. Why don't more players do that for their teams when they retire? Just the base salaries as the bonuses are locked in.
-
why couldn't we have done that with Luke in his base salary?
-
I really see NE Pats taking him at 15. We should not take him at 8. If he fell to the 2nd round, I would take a chance on him.

Panthers (Fits) sign former Seahawk PS TE DE to futures contract
musicman replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
Potentially a good signing. Even if he makes the team as the 3rd TE. Not like we have all pros lining up at TE. -
The only part that's realistic is that it drops the Texans cap way down. And we still have Teddy and his salary to deal with. Very lopsided and only will work if the Jets and Dolphins are not interested in Watson. Even Atl can't do that and the Lions and Bengals won't.

We may not be drafting a QB with the 8th pick but maybe later...
musicman replied to musicman's topic in Carolina Panthers
You're probably right and a man of reason on here. My small fear is Watson is another Cam on a 2nd contract. He plays very physical and runs a decent amount. Will one day it take its toll and he's only great for another few years? That's why I would rather have a Trevor or build a team and wait. -

musicman replied to musicman's topic in Carolina Panthers
I agree, but we don't know "how deep or hard" they tried? It could be just due diligence and perception for the fans that they are trying every angle, so if it doesn't happen, they don't like they didn't try. If we are going to give away the farm, go for Trevor. He's as close to a sure thing in the draft as possible. But Watson and Mahomes were not #1 picks either so maybe wait. Its a crap shoot to a degree. Exciting if anything to see how it all unfolds. -

More important than an arm is the mind and how fast you can process information. Brady didn't have an incredible arm but was smart as hell. Also, had an amazing coach and a great team around him most of the time. All QBs have decent to great arms or they wouldn't be a starting college QB. And a running QB has a shorter life span. Look at the QBs that play into their late 30's and 40's. Non are running QBs. -

That's what the Bears did. Most times drafting a QB is a gamble at any spot. Stafford was at least proven. If they don't get Watson without giving away the farm, I don't see it. If you're gonna give away the farm for #2, might as well go for #1, it's less of a gamble with Lawrence, but i don't see them giving away all this picks. Our new GM is proven to be a guy who accumulates picks. -

But what about the O-line and players we'll need over the next year or so, so this drafted QB and the team can thrive? -
Watching the Stafford trade and knowing we can not afford to trade for Watson makes me think. We can not afford to give up too many picks to move up (maybe 1 slot) and the top 3 QBs will be gone. If the Panthers don't love Lance (which is risky since he's only got 1 great year against not so great talent), I can not see them drafting a QB at 8. I think maybe they'll sign a back up plan for a year in case they don't a QB later in the 1st round or early rounds, but they have a decent QB in Teddy. I think they can trade back and get a Mac Jones or some one else while acquiring more picks. But trading back, getting more picks and building a solid foundation for the next few years and keep that turning until the perfect franchise QB is found, traded for or developed is my prediction. Getting a couple of more 2nd or 3rd round picks could be what we need to get us (along with a healthy CMC) to a fringe playoff team. Tepper said he's not looking to build a quick winner but a long sustainable and perennial winner. Having a good solid team all around is needed, especially on the O-line which we are hurting is needed. Maybe we don't get out franchise QB until 2023. Even if we drafted Mac Jones in the 2nd or 3rd round and he turned out great a year or so later, it would take a couple of years to build the rest of the team around him any way. The reward has to out way the risk. Look at teams where it set them back. The Bears are a good team but can't get over the hill because they went all in with Trubisky. Denver has been searching for 5 years. SF put too much in on an unproven Jimmy G. This is all speculation but I would rather have a winning team, year in and year out then take the risk on a pick at QB because that's what my fan base wants. Even with a decent QB, we can be 10-6 or better ever year and maybe once year it takes us to the top, but always searching for that 1 QB who can be there for 12-15 years, knowing we have a team around him. Also, my thought goes this way because the QB contracts are out of hand. Dallas is fearful about committing so much to Dak. Rams screwed themselves. Mahomes could have got more but he did it like Tom Brady so they can have a team around him. Not every QB is like that. Just my thoughts and would love to hear yours, not just bash this.
